rktman was merely commenting on the inability of U.K. or Australian citizens to defend themselves with firearms, thanks mostly to restrictions that are fairly recent in both countries. The brutal murder of Drummer Rigby is illustrative, especially where the police were concerned.
Yes, if that muslim savage had attacked an unarmed soldier in the U.S., he might have been cut down by an armed citizen.

As to the police, the police initially with no reports of a gun being mentioned to them, when it was noted, the armed unit was sent for. Please note that its police procedure to do so. Also note the original coppers were armed with a 50,000 volt stun gun, so they weren’t unarmed. They could and should have used it, but were ordered to wait for the armed unit, as they had reported (by sight) that Rigby was clearly dead already. Had he been injured or fighting the men, the police would have charged in with batons and the stun gun.
The original coppers were there in 2-3m, the armed unit arrived in 9m.
