Is it National Guard or the reserves? I always thought he was in the reserves or are they the same thing?
Just a hunch,,,but if he was sent to special Artillery training, it was ARMY Reserve and not National Guard

When you go into the Army, your actual term of service is 6 years. So you would typically do 3 years of active duty and be in the reserves for 3 years. People in the reserves would be the first ones to be called up if a war breaks out. The National Guard units are controlled by the states but can be federalized by the prez. Guard units usually meet once a month and have 2 weeks of training each summer.
