President Barack Obamas push to hire military veterans for jobs across the government is fueling resentment in federal offices, as longtime civil servants and former troops on the other side of the cubicle increasingly question each others competence and qualifications.
With veterans moving to the head of the hiring queue in the biggest numbers in a generation, theres growing bitterness on both sides, according to dozens of interviews with federal employees.
Those who did not serve in the military bristle at times at the preferential hiring of veterans and accuse them of a blind deference to authority. The veterans chafe at what they say is a condescending view of their skills and experience and accuse many non-veterans of lacking a work ethic and sense of mission.

Veterans preference has been around forever. Dislike of the military has been around forever..
The issue is government bureaucracy. Staff it with angels and it will turn into hell. The socialist notion that the system just needs the right people to make it work is crap. Apparently “conservatives” have the same faith in the federal leviathan.
I am a White Vet, 70+ or like RR said 24 celcius.
As a rule, I believe in ‘merit’ hiring with a few exceptions.
Possibly Affirmative Action may have had a little merit in regards to quality of education and other little hidden things up through the 50s and 60s.
Of course, when the other ‘working’ class ethnic people ‘moved up’ a stage, it was basically done on their own.
I will not be so naive to not admit that a job or two I may have gotten because I was White and could put a couple of sentences together -I may not have been the most ‘qualified’ candidate but my Gender, Ethnicity added to being a Vet made me hirable.
I did believe in the VA Loan for a house for Vets seeing how a lot of us were serving and getting a step or two behind as to job seniority and earning ability.
And all that did was VA would guarantee the loan and a down payment could be waived.
I never took advantage of the GI Bill for college.
Very glad I already retired from the federal government.
Great post.
2009. But I believe the full implementation of the plan took another year or two.
