Actually, the natural reaction of many English has indeed been to say, "Don't let the door hit your arse on the way out."
That said, national unity is quite a bit more than the sum of the parts and a ledger sheet.
I don't have a dog in this fight, but I can clearly see that the Scottish independence pols are looking to aggrandize themselves and enhance their power. They are devout socialists and hardly seek indepence of the individual Scot, they just want their own freedom to weild a heavier hand. The romantic Hollywood William Wallace they aren't.
Do they even have a proposed system of government or monetary system?

That said, independence will set off a chain reaction that must eventuate in a swing from socialism to capitalism - and years later progressively to socialism, as the USA has done.
Taking responsibility is the only way anyone or nation matures.
