Mice can easily squeeze thru ¼" slits in doors, sideboarding, vents, garage doors, insulation sheets, windows, ducts, plumbing and waste tunnels... they're amazingly adept, with a slightly soft skull which compresses to fit minute spaces. I did 2 existing buildings on the Farm, and when the others were built, they were 'critter proofed' to the nth degree. My cats took care of the few who got thru, and a few actually did.

Never leave your garage door open for any extended time in the fall. They'll hide in the garage, and wait by the house door for you to open it and scurry in undetected.

Do you have an attic? That’s where mine were. Mice poop everywhere in a place I would have needed a flashlight to see.

If the mice are finding a food/water source on the floor - dog/cat dishes - they won’t climb on to counters/tables etc, where you’d notice droppings. Floor droppings can be missed on rugs or carpeting; we’re not talking cowpies or German Shepherds’ leavings...

There is an attic opening in the house, but it has been covered and not opened once since I moved into the house. I have a hunch they are coming in from the basement somewhere...the cat that is the best mouser tends to “live” in the basement and the first level of the house, and she is the one that tends to “brng them to me”

Mine all came in at ground level and crawled up behind the walls to the attic. Never found any droppings on the lower floors ever. They used the attic as their shelter and went outside for food and water so we never saw them.

We have feral cats around here. You can’t pet them, but they keep the mice away.
