Patrol their OWN borders, raise their OWN navy, see to their OWN national security, etc.???

That's nothing compared to the fact that they won't be able to blame the English anymore if things don't go well for them after independence.

The whole switcheroo will likely shake things up a lot more than just changing the flag. Just patrolling and securing the extensive coastal areas would be, in itself, a monumental undertaking for a country without a navy of their own.
