A Southern California high school has changed its nickname from the Arabs to the Mighty Arabs and has adopted a logo with a nobler image, school officials announced Wednesday.
The Coachella Valley Unified School District governing board unanimously adopted the changes in a closed-session meeting Tuesday night after months of pressure from Arab-American anti-discrimination groups.
"Dealing with the mascot issue has gone worldwide," Superintendent Daryl Adams said, according to the Desert-Sun ( http://desert.sn/1lUE3AK ). "I'm glad to see that coming to an end."
Officials at Coachella Valley High School consulted with Arab-American groups in getting rid of the scowling, hook-nosed image in the old logo and adopting the more stoic face in the new one.
Abed Ayuoub of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee said the group fully supports the new mascot and image.
"We passed it around to experts and community members," Ayoub told the Desert-Sun. "We took our time to get the opinion of that logo, and it was overwhelmingly positive."
The Arab mascot has existed since the 1920s to recognize the desert region's reliance on date farming, a traditionally Middle Eastern crop.
The school had already abandoned the mascot costume that had imagery similar to the old logo, along with the belly dancing genie that appeared with him.

Will the mascot wear a suicide belt?
” When Jesus Olivares and Sergio Espinoza set out to design a new mascot for Coachella Valley High School, they knew they needed to strike a perfect balance.”
Were the Arabs insulted by the fact that it was designed by Jesus?
“A Southern California high school”
Figures. They don’t call California the land of fruits and nuts
for no reason. Arabs are cowards, they hide behind children
and sneak up and stab people in the back.
Mighty Arabs, might as well be Mighty Scumbags. That’s California for you.
Government indoctrination center coordinated with mideast clansmen collectivists to program yutes.
If anything they should have changed the name to the Corsairs.
A really stupid reason for the mascot name to begin with. And considering that (Arabs, Most of the Middle East) muslims are at war with America NO SCHOOL should have a “Arab” mascot...........
Instead if the Mighty Arabs, it should be the Mighty Camel Buggers...
Exactly.
“Mighty Arabs”? That sounds silly and puerile, bringing to mind kids’ cartoons—Mighty Mouse, mighty Max, Mighty Hercules, etc.
I say drop the Arab thing altogether and call them the Crusaders.
“That’s California for you.”
1. The proprietors of this site are based in CA so what
does that make you?
2. More Freepers are from CA than anywhere else.
3. Houston is a real bastion of conservatism, ain’t it?
4. Uptight Native Americans should take a hint from the
Arabs.

Should’ve changed the mascot to an American soldier dressed in camo, arms high in the air, an assault rifle in one hand, an American flag in the other...and, renamed the team the “Mighty Warriors”.
When they aren't raping them.
So America should be more like California? A blue state with
a few red spots here and there. No Thanks.
Back in the days of “I dream of Jeanie”, it was probably a cute idea. A desert high school has an Arabian theme? Kind of appropriate. We had a high school near us with an Arabian theme— the Santana High School Sultans. The flag girls wore these belly dancing sort of costumes. Nobody minded.
Good thing nobody put Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish in the same category as the Irish Republican Army. People seemed to understand it was just a mascot.
Coachella Valley High School Murderous islamists
America should not be like CA but when you make
blanket comments w/out excepting millions of CA
conservatives then you can expect to maybe hear from one.
