Current systems actually work fairly well with commercial airliners, etc. Much tougher with fighter/attack aircraft given their operating environment.

BTW, one pilot in my Air Group survived two mid-airs, one in the F-4 and the other in a F/A-18. In both cases the aircrew in the other aircraft were killed. We used to tell him he needed to move to a cinderblock house in the prairie and have someone push oatmeal under the door to him because he was completely out of luck for the rest of his life.
