That is an excellent point, and leads to other conjecture. I do believe that in his mind he remains true to his Islamic heritage. The Muslims he has fought, and is fighting have to be un-Islamic in order for him to keep his self-view intact. He has fought to establish a new caliphate, and almost succeeded. It still may happen. However, his fight against ISIL makes sense if in his mind, HE IS THE LEGITIMATE CALIPH. Fighting against his vision of the middle east, a caliphate of the Hamas/Hezbollah/MB variety, is fighting against Islam's best interests, to him.
