While stiffing a poor wait staff is bad form if you get good service. People forget they DO NOT MAKE MIN WAGE, tips are supposed to make that up.
We tip for the 2 of us 15%. When we go with a party of 6 with family members it’s 18% automatic on the bill.
Paying a doctor .28 cents for a office call by Medicare and Tricare Life is not even considered an issue. Yes, that is what those 2 gov’t run medical care paid my Gastro last visit.
I see him again today, wonder if they will just pay him the same .28 cents?
Now why do you wanna go and ruin a perfect opportunity for folks to bash on a sports figure who makes millions and leaves a paltry 0.20 cent tip by injecting facts into the discussion?
Facts don’t matter, perceptions do...and as many here have pointed out on other threads, leaving the paltry tip is a clear sign that the patron was NOT happy nor satisfied in the least with the service.
Tips are EARNED, they are not a right...
Hubby will leave a 15% tip even for bad service.
I on the other hand when alone will do the same as you 2 cents.
We went to the Famed Memphis Rendezvous known for it’s Ribs, It is where Elvis like to get them and GWB took that Japanese Elvis nut to. Hubby and I split a rack of ribs. They came out of the kitchen COLD, TOUGH, NO MEAT ON THE BONE. Runny mustard based coleslaw and COLD FF’, and lukewarm baked beans. Which were just a can of Pork and Beans with BBQ sauce in them. We were served on paper plates, with plastic utensils.
I don’t tolerate unsafe food. I walked out leaving the 5 of then sitting there eating that horrid stuff and walked down to Huey’s and had a fantastic HOT cook to order, hamburger and FF.
So heads up if you come to Memphis and want great ribs use Longhorn’s. Or Corky’s!
I think part of the explanation is that a waiter to them is like a slave.
I don’t know who came up with this quote, “The slave doesn’t dream of being free, he dreams of being Master.”
This is their chance to be “Master.”
Because the guy leaves some petulant drama queen, who gave $hitty service a wake up call, he’s a “jerk”?
I’ve had servers who wouldn’t respond to requests, I actually had one that I told I was going to leave a crappy tip unless they changed their attitude and service...it had NO effect...they felt ENTITLED.
Screw that. They got $1 on $50+ check, much more than they deserved, but wife convinced me to leave it...so yeah, that makes me the “jerk”.
He added to total correctly based on his tip.
“Do you care to explain your remarks about senior citizens?”
Sure. The sense of entitlement is exactly the same: Give me your money.
Was I too cryptic?
I will add to the credit card bill to make it an even dollar amount and leave the rest of the tip on the table in cash.

Interesting point.
Maybe the owner should be checking the ‘video tape’ and seeing if the bus boy got to the table first. Or another waiter/ress.
I try to hand the tip to the person I wanted to get it - EVEN when leaving on a CC as there are actually some owners (GASP) that may ‘forget’ to distribute the monies properly at the end of the day.
Even when ‘short tipping’ for atrocious service etc I make it a point of asking the person for change for a dollar and make sure they see me set the nickel down. I do NOT want them to get the impression that I made a mistake or simply ‘forgot’.
Always a good idea for the person who thinks they should be getting tips to CHECK all the CC receipts etc..
Do you care to explain your remarks about senior citizens?

Was wondering if you had the same comments when YOUR parents/grandparents were collecting their SS?
After all, the US Govt has withheld 15% of my dollars for some 50+ years with the ‘promise’ it was like an ‘investment’ in my future or some such excuse.
Yes, the people that have managed to ‘dip in the system’ by working most of their lives NOT paying into the fund, or us supporting some 25 yo drunk or druggie should be looked into and stopped but that doesn’t appear likely.
Maybe that is where you should be venting your ‘anger’.
Other than my USN pay, the ONLY money I have EVER received from the GOV was/is my SS. As to taxes, I have normally owed and even there a refund was just getting MY money back.
I have ALWAYS worked and never did get involved in the ‘earned income’ BS or whatever kind of giveaway program these POLS come up with to make sure they keep their lazy butts in office forever.
So what is your point?
Mine is that a waiter expecting a 15% tip (minimum) feels entitled, just like a senior citizen feels entitled to their check from the government (for the reasons you outlined - “investment”, “promise”, etc).
The feeling of entitlement is exactly the same.
I think you agree with me.
So what is your point?
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
My point is you are broadbrushing EVERYONE into one category.
If you would vent your anger at those that are ‘taking advantage of the system’ I would agree with you.
Someone who worked for the Govt and had NO FICA taken out, retiring then getting a job at the local hardware store in order to ‘get quarters’ for SS is not in the spirit of what it was meant to be.
Because someone is a drunk or drug abuser and at 25 is drawing some form of SS is not in the spirit of what it is meant to be.
If someone ‘runs out’ of unemployment checks and suddenly develops a phobia towards work or not and gets designated to be on ‘disability’ with the SS fund ‘covering the bill’, again is not what was meant to be.
The ‘ambulance chasers’ of old are now advertising to the ‘daytime crowd’ of TV with ‘tons’ of ads for assisting people in receiving SS Disability funds.
Like it or not SS was ‘invented’ in 1937? or 38? not only to suck more money out of the people but was witheld with the intention being if people were of a mind to NOT put aside money for their ‘Senior Years’, the Govt would TAKE YOUR money and put it aside for you.
My first witholding was at 14 and have basically NEVER missed a day without a JOB since. Some I have created on my own, some I worked for others.
Whether I made good bad or indifferent choices is a moot point...US GOVT withheld .15 out of every 1.00 I earned AND it was ‘earmarked’ for my golden years - and I didn’t start drawing till I was 68.
I didn’t make the rules, I followed them.
If you are paying into and receiving compensation towards retirement for a company that has employed you for 35 or so years and when you go to draw your first check and you are told that the ‘new employees’ don’t think it is ‘fair’ that they should be contributing to YOUR retirement fund, we can discuss this like adults.
I am NOT saying that SS is supposed to be anymore than an supplemental fund but people have run the #’s and that .15 cents invested per hr certainly builds up - IF it is in the right place.
algore was wrong in saying that SS was in a lock box BUT I am sure that is/was the original intention until some brain (like his old man??) decided the General Fund is where it should be OR we will ‘borrow’ it and return it later.
That is how most embezzlers start....Borrow 50 bucks from the petty cash fund and before long they are into the bank account......
“What kind of “help” does working a slot machine require?”
I agree. The question needs to be addressed to JennysCool.
The customers of an establishment didn’t set up that IRS rule and most probably know little or nothing about it. TIP stands for “To Insure Promptness” and if the service isn’t to the liking of a patron, for whatever reason, they are under no obligation to tip, unless you’re suggesting mandatory tipping. I would never frequent a place that required me to tip the staff no matter what the service was like. I once had a sister-in-law who was a low-life skank, but she was a terrific white tablecloth waitress and was in demand by high-end restaurants and private clubs and never seemed to bring home less than $200 a night and often quite a bit more. It’s a trade like any other, and the better ones make more money.
And a private matter.
EXACTLY! That’s the whole point of giving the 20 cents, to make sure the server knows that is wasn’t an oversight (forgot to tip) but rather a deliberate expression of the customer’s EXTREME displeasure.
Regardless of whether or not this tip was justified, it is a private matter between the customer and the server. The owner is WAY out of bounds by posting this and publicly taking sides over this issue.
When you win a larger jackpot, the machine does not pay out the winnings. A person has to attend to you, verify the machine and then pay you your winnings.
Above a certain threshold, the IRS takes its cut first as well.
In vegas, single play jackpots over $ 1200 or $1250 must be paid by an attendant, with a handy 1099-G. :-)
Then you go to the racetrack and ask people for their losing bet slips, so you can offset your winnings with gambling losses. ;-)
” most demanding of patrons beyond measure.”
yep, that’s another thing . I have tried to overwhelm possible reticence by giving far and above loving customer service . Never to see reward . Now I have also had some really great interactions as well , and in the customer service /tourism industry you just cannot hold that expectation ; tips are a blessing and not an obligation . They are also the reason why so many employers pay such a low wages , they figure you will abet your income in tips . So when you don’t , you better be happy with your base pay . There are certainly many foreign countries where tipping is NOT a tradition. I listed a few . It’s just always strange when a segment of our American native born population seem to fit in to a foreign tradition ( or lack thereof )
