It took more than a year, but D.C. statehood advocates are finally getting the hearing that Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Thomas R. Carper promised.
The Delaware Democrat will hold a full committee hearing Sept. 15 on his New Columbia Admission Act, a bill that would unite the eight wards of the city into a full-fledged state, excluding federal landmarks such as the Capitol, White House and Supreme Court. Carper introduced the measure in January 2013 and six months later tweeted about a fall 2013 hearing on statehood.

Give the land back to Maryland and Virginia and stop your whining...
Virginia got its land back a few decades before the Civil War. It’s Maryland that should be the object of a retrocession of the District.
I agree. Give it to Maryland.
Another idea that has no chance of passing but might help stir passions in the Democratic base constituencies. Anyway, why should the remaining bits of land that would not be part of the new state be entitled to cast three electoral votes? It would be a "rotten borough" like those in England before the Reform Act of 1832.
Give it to Maryland and then move the capital to Topeka or Ames. Then, 10 years later, move it again!

If they want a vote, then join Maryland.
Because those clymers stuck it in the Constitution as an amendment.
Give it to Maryland, along with Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax County, Prince William County in VA (and throw in Carper’s Delaware, too, since it is too ludicrously small to be a state anymore).
Don’t they have to change the Constitution first ? Oh wait, these are DemocRATs - never mind

no they will keep the 23rd Amendment and the 3 electoral votes for the National Capital Service Area. /s
Nuke it from space.
It’s the only way to be sure.
There shouldn’t be more than a few actual residents of D.C. Cut the government to its constitutional size, no problem. All the parasites can go elsewhere.
Did someone put a mirror under Silent Tom’s nose to see if he is still breathing? Silent Tom hasn’t said much since he (allegedly) punched his ex-girlfriend.
How about closing down DC permanently, give the land to Maryland and turn it into a national historic site. Let the Senators and Reps teleconference from their home states.
That should keep the lobbyists busy travelling.
Put the president in a hotel room.
Yes, give it to Maryland. Virginia was given “their” portion back long ago.
Maryland and the District deserve each other and should go down the “Detroit” highway together. And I say that as one currently trapped in the People’s Democratic State of Maryland.
Isn’t this plan nothing more than a ploy by Senate Democrats to try to win two more Democratic-controlled Senate seats?
Sick and bored with this argument that DC doesn’t have representation. Actually they have 100 senators and 435 representatives.
None of the states have all that.
If the District of Corruption is turned into a faux state, where the hell will we move the nation’s capitol to? Surely it cannot be kept in D.C. It would definitely have to be moved.
