Matt’s doing a good job leveraging his position on a #2 show into an even more lucrative contract. Looking back, I think that was his strategy is getting rid of Ann Curry; he knew that anyone brought in to co-anchor would be a relative newcomer and play second fiddle to him. So, while Today’s ratings receded even faster than his hairline, Lauer still got himself a pay raise and free helicopter rides to his place in the Hamptons.
Nice work if you can get it. I’m sure the suits at ABC are laughing; their entire anchor team makes only a little bit more than the $20 million a year paid to Lauer, so generate a much better rate of return than NBC.
