RENO, Nev. Tesla Motors has chosen Nevada as the site for a massive, $5 billion factory that will pump out batteries for a new generation of electric cars, a person familiar with the company's plans said Wednesday.
The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made, said work would soon resume at an industrial park outside Reno.
Four other states -- California, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico -- were vying for the project and the estimated 6,500 jobs it will bring.

How long does a set of batteries last, and how much do they cost. Same question about traction motors...what is the service interval on the brushes, and who does the work?
Nevada is full of union members.
Almost all of the Vegas casinos are unionized.
Harry Reid is an creation of the Vegas union mob.
I live in N Nevada.
There is an item on the coming Nov election called ‘The Margins Tax”.
Nevada has no corp or individual income tax. That alone brings companies to Nevada for business, despite the fact that the labor pool here isn’t the greatest. Lots of drugs & an overload of people who never graduated high school.
However, the teachers unions are trying to get a tax of 2% on the GROSS revenue of companies on all money above $1 million in Gross for a new tax ‘for the children’. When one considers all the casinos, etc, this would raise a tremendous amount of money.
The total population of Nevada is under 3 million. Even if there are 200,000 kids here, this tax is a back door to an income tax and the ballot item is not written tightly enough to keep the money in the fund for ONLY schools, etc.
Anyone with a lick of sense is voting against this tax.
IMO, Tesla better stick to only moving dirt until AFTER this election. IF this darn thing passes, TESLA will be smart to go elsewhere.
The plant is going into the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Park near I-80 east of Reno. The owner is Lance Gilman. I don’t know if he has any connections to Dirty Harry—who is hated in N Nevada except for Washoe County. This place is located in Storey County.
Unions are strong in Clark County- Las Vegas—Not so much in Reno, except for culinary workers.
I can see how Harry would have done his best to remove Bundy if he could have placed the Tesla plant there-—far more UNION influence in So Nevada.
Thanks, sounds like good advice and from past experience with family who lived in NV I wouldn’t think this measure will pass.
Yes-—400++.
Alot of people already commute 50 miles a day or more one way to Reno to work. Not everybody lives in Reno. Housing costs a bit further are much less.
The other downside of battery powered cars is that the rear tires are used up quickly from the weight of the batteries.
The industrial park borders the railroad.
“The other downside of battery powered cars is that the rear tires are used up quickly from the weight of the batteries.”
Except the battery is located between the front and rear tires, equally.
And not over the rear tires.

I’ve also heard the Tesla has impressive acceleration and it looks goood too, but I’m amazed they are touting 300 miles on one charge.
Everything I’ve read about electric cars says the sticking point is the distance on one charge with around 200 miles being the point of more widespread acceptance. But no other car maker has reached that 200 mile per charge yet. If true, Tesla has made a breakthrough.
If theTesla Model S isn’t the fastest sedan 0-60 in the World it’s close. Max range on the top of the line P85 is listed as 265 miles.
Go to the Tesla site and look, fairly impressive 8 yr unlimited mile warranty as I recall.
I know a lot of people on FR aren’t fans of Musk.
And quite frankly I myself was a skeptic until I actually test drove the car. But driving it made a believer out of me. Unlike the other electric cars out there that are glorified toys that people buy to make themselves feel good about being green, this is a real car.
Solar City, also owned by Musk, sells and installs home batteries that they advertise as using “Tesla Technology”. The wall mounted battery cabinet has a Tesla label on it.
