US Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday called for a world coalition to defeat the Islamic State (Isis) militant group which has seized control of large parts of Iraq and Syria and was cited by the British prime minister, David Cameron, when he raised the UKs terror threat level to severe on Friday.
In an op-ed for the New York Times that was released online on Friday night and in print on Saturday, Kerry wrote: In a polarised region and a complicated world, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria presents a unifying threat to a broad array of countries, including the United States. Whats needed to confront its nihilistic vision and genocidal agenda is a global coalition using political, humanitarian, economic, law enforcement and intelligence tools to support military force.
Kerrys call was foreshadowed this week by briefings to the press about moves by the US to seek such a global effort.
Also on Saturday, during a reception for foreign ministers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabias King Abdullah said terrorism, which he called an evil force that must be fought with wisdom and speed, would after a month arrive in Europe and a month after that in America.
The US carried out further air strikes on Isis targets in Iraq on Friday; recent debate has centered around the possibility that such strikes could be extended into Syria, leading to the beginning of reconnaissance flights. US military operations in Iraq began on 16 June and air strikes on 8 August; such operations have so far cost half a billion dollars at a rate of $7.5m a day.
In his New York Times op-ed, Kerry wrote: Airstrikes alone wont defeat this enemy.

Didn't Earnest tell us a couple of weeks ago that there would be no military involved...they would seek only a politcal solution?
OK Kerry I agree that a coalition should wipe out ISIS. But I have a bunch of unanswered questions:
1. Why did you support radical groups in Syria that formed ISIS?
2. Are you willing to help the Syrian government defeat ISIS in Syria?
3. Why wasn’t a coalition developed months ago?
4. Why wasn’t ISIS bombed months ago?
5. Why does Obama say ISIS should be contained when it should be eliminated?
6. Why does Obama say we haven’t a strategy? How hard is it to develop a strategy to wipe out evil terrorists like ISIS?
7. Is the U.S. still at war with Islamic Terrorists and is the War on Terror still ongoing?
Chill, JF’nK. Our golfing president obviously isn’t concerned about genocide.
They can teach "How to alienate the world - 101"
More amazing is that our long time allies in the UK / CAN / AUS are prepping up in spite of. That, in an of itself, should be a 4 alarm internal going off for any western country.
What does sKerry suggest? Cutting off their ears and attaching batteries to their genitals?
Like the USA military can’t crush these bugs who are worse than Ghenghis Khan?
Unfortunately, even under Bush all we got was religion of peace fairy tails, open borders, and strip searches for 80 year old grandmas with knitting needles.
Yes I know it should be tales. If there were real fairies they probably wouldn’t have tails.
Kerry is an idiot.
NO ONE suggesting beefed up U.S. airstrikes thinks they would be effective if the local good guys are not also doing the jobs they are best fitted for, because as needed as they are on the ground, they cannot do what we can do from the air and they need THAT kind of support only we can muster.
That Mr John Idiot Kerry is the difference.
And the only “strategy” about it is an agreement to act, now, in a coordinated fashion, with our Iraqi allies, and minute by minute, day by day, with all the resources we can effectively put into it.
We have the human resources in and beyond Iraq trained and knowledgeable for that coordination with the Iraqis. It does not take some long winded strategy to task our forces toward that coordination between us in the air (mostly) and our allies on the ground.
Failure to act with what you know you already have the limits to act within is not a strategy.
So.... let's spend a couple of months persuading the UN that they should do something.
Naw, John. You gotta shoot ‘em in the back? Remember?
He is right—it will take more than bombs (unless we use Nukes—or high radiation bombs that kill everyone) —But why not go in—finish off Al Baghdadi and his 40 theives—then get out again. If we try really hard—I bet we could do it in 100 days!
Very very funny.
professional bull riders?
HOw’s that gonna help?
Not with the enemy islamist CIC.
Kerry writes as if he is being paid by the word....
Maybe he is....
