ROCKUMENTARY: AUGUST 30, 1966

Cue the Rockumentary theme!

San Remo Golden Strings: “Festival Time”

#5 – Donovan: “Sunshine Superman”

It took Donovan Leitch a while to find his style, but once he found it, he got quite a few hits off it. This was his first major hit in his own style. Catch the harpsichord in the arrangement.

#4 – Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs: “Little Red Riding Hood”

Domingo Samudio had a wonderful sense of humor. The fade-out of this song is hilarious.

Hi Publius!
(((HUGS))))

Never did care for Donovan, although he was VERY popular.
Around that time I was drifting between The Haight/Ashbury Sound, Blues and Soul, Cream, the Stones, and all the dark, scary Classical I could find. And I LOVED Gypsy Music, Russian Choral Works and Folk Music from places like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Hungary.
I went to the main library in Boston and took out several recordings every week on the Melodiya LP Label. I learned so many Russian Folk Songs that I got a gig in a Russian Tea Room where I sang in a full costume and accompanied myself on guitar.

It was also around this time (High School)that I began composing my own music.

Hey, M-L.

(HUGS)

You've sure been around. My popular music period was 1964-74, after which I returned to my first love, classical music. I dove headfirst into chamber music in 1977 and into lieder and art songs in 1987. I haven't been up for air since.

#35 – The Kinks: “Sunny Afternoon”

Ray Davies is one of great songwriters of the Sixties and beyond. Drumbo did a wonderful retrospective of his music. This is one of his finest social commentaries.

I hadn’t really gotten into chamber music or lieder that much, perhaps because at the time, I wanted a lot of bombast and angst. The wailing of the Steppes of Central Asia gave me plenty of THAT! LOL!

#3 – The Happenings: “See You in September”

When the Four Seasons dislodged the Tokens from their niche, they turned to writing commercials and producing other acts, which made them wealthy. They produced this band from Paterson (NJ) on their private label. The song had originally been recorded by the Tempos in 1959, and the Tokens team of Margo, Margo, Medress and Siegel gave it a different, more upbeat sound.

#34 – Simon & Garfunkel: “The Dangling Conversation”

After three huge hits in a row, it was time for the duo to have an honorable failure for a single. But the album on which this tune resided was one of the biggest sellers of the year. It’s haunting and very well produced. The boys were only a year away from Mike Nichols’ decision to feature their music in “The Graduate”, one of the biggest moneymakers of all time.

#2 – Bobby Hebb: “Sunny”

On the night of the Kennedy assassination, Bobby Hebb sat down and wrote this song, which has developed a following in jazz circles.

Good evening, Maestro! I did not realize that this was a failure as a single - it got plenty of play on the air in DC Land. The text has stuck with me almost fifty years later.

America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi!

O stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians that we lie here, obedient to their command.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

It's a great song, but it didn't sell as well as their previous three. The next single, "At the Zoo", did better, but it was still not like the first three. The "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme" album sold very well, however.

It was the "Bookends" album of 1968, connected to the release of "The Graduate", that made them stars.
