Riots in Guinea as officials accused of transmitting Ebola

Conakry - Riots broke out in Guinea's second-largest city Nzerekore over rumours that health workers had infected people with the deadly Ebola virus, a Red Cross official and residents said on Friday.

A crowd of young men, some armed with clubs and pistols, set up barricades across the southern city on Thursday and threatened to attack the hospital before security forces moved in to restore order.

Gunshots were fired by the rioters and several people were injured, said Youssouf Traore, president of the Guinean Red Cross.

"A rumour, which was totally false, spread that we had sprayed the market in order to transmit the virus to locals," Traore said. "People revolted and resorted to violence, prompting soldiers to intervene."

Local Red Cross workers had to flee to the military camp with their medical equipment.

Concern over rising cases

Another resident said the security forces were preventing people leaving their neighbourhoods overnight.

The highly contagious Ebola virus was first reported in south-eastern Guinea in March and to date has killed more than 1 500 people in the worst outbreak in history.

More than 400 people have died in Guinea, although the rate of infection is slower than in neighbouring Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Conakry says it has controlled the epidemic but has expressed concern over rising cases in the southern border region, which it blames on victims spilling over from neighbouring countries in search of better treatment.

The Guinean government's last health report for 26 August showed there were 12 suspected, probable and confirmed Ebola cases in Nzerekore.

I heard today there is a confirmed case in Dakar, Senegal, where thousands of American tourists go every year to visit the embarcation point of their African slave ancestors.

How soon until someone brings it home with him/her?

Not to mention all the missionaries traveling back and forth this time of year to West Africa.

To show the mind set of some in West Africa, here’s a comment at News24:

Ok, scroll down to the first graph.

Notice how the ‘pink’ part of the bar chart seems to be much more under control than the rest of it?

Almost makes me wonder who, specifically, wants to increase ebola transmission in Guinea...

“The news gives added weight to fears that the current outbreak is far from its peak. On Thursday, the WHO warned that the outbreak could infect more than 20,000 people before it ends.”

Seems a bit of a low estimate........

Do not think it will be any different when Ebola
comes to Ferguson Missouri.

Seems a bit of a low estimate....

Maybe by a lot. Consider just one quarantined slum, West Point in Monrovia. It has a population variously described as 50,000 to 75,000 and already ebola has already broken out there. Not an easy job trying to trace the contacts in an angry and scared population. Next two to three weeks will show if the tide has been stemmed, but the outlook isn't good. .

20,000 people before it ends.”

Probably kill 20,000 but it may be that by orders of
magnitude.
I personally will be surprised if it dies out before
getting to the rest of the world.

There was another story on how you could bribe your way out of the West Point slum. $$$$ to be made if you want to run the risk.

I wouldn’t ponder too much on that pdf. It’s a corporate board room pass around with a power point presentation no doubt to upper admin folk. By design the graphics and “graphs” are meant to obscure or hide info. Had to attend way too many useless meetings with stuff such as that. And on the flip side, prepared my share of the same.

The only real data is the chart with most of the same info the public WHO page shows.

Fair enough.

Look at the numbers for Guinea. Compared to Liberia and Sierra Leone it’s fared pretty good so far.

Until riots and stuff.

It’s like someone looked at the numbers and decided that it was underperforming and decided to ‘fix that’.

Really not much difference from some of the comments right here on FR Ebola threads.

Eeeee-bolllll-aaaaaa ping!

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...
