A competing rifle outperformed the Armys favored M4A1 carbine in key firings during a competition last year before the service abruptly called off the tests and stuck with its gun, according to a new confidential report.
The report also says the Army changed the ammunition midstream to a round tailored for the M4A1 rifle. It quoted competing companies as saying the switch was unfair because they did not have enough time to fire the new ammo and redesign their rifles before the tests began.
Exactly how the eight challengers and the M4 performed in a shootout to replace the M4, a soldiers most important personal defense, has been shrouded in secrecy.
But an official use only report by the Center for Naval Analyses shows that one of the eight unidentified weapons outperformed the M4 on reliability and on the number of rounds fired before the most common type of failures, or stoppages, occurred, according to data obtained by The Washington Times.

Ha! I told him he was welcome to it. I knew I wasn’t coming back.
You handle that by keeping the same ammo and gradually phase in the new rifle!!!
Really? You try peeing on cartridges in the middle of a firefight!
Good luck.
Agreed. One helluva statement to stop a 50 cal at 20 feet. Should be massive internal injuries.
What General has a consulting job locked up in the future? Follow the money.
The videos indicate the armor is made with Al so is light, but has some real possibilities. The armor itself spalls on impact, which while stopping the round, disfigures the back of the armor plate—the body contact part. But still is cool stuff.
***Good luck.***
That’s what I thought! I bet even your spit dries up.
With the terrorists actually outnumbering the enemies we faced in WWII, I must agree. (1.5 Billion Muslims X 15% ready to rumble on world-wide jihad). The "Moderate Muslim" argument makes about as much sense as the "Good Germans" argument in WWII! The "Moderate Muslim" supports the jihad just as much as a "Good German" working in the Krupp Works, or buying German War Bonds.
But when it comes to weapons, our procurement people seem just as hide-bound as the stodgiest Civil War thinkers, who stuck with muzzle-loaders when the 7-shot Spencer Rifle was readily available. Our Pentagoners are stuck on 5.56.
Our Pentagoners are stuck on back room payoffs!!!
I would think the concussion alone would kill you!!!
3,000 against 500 is not a significant improvement?
“Still, the competition results suggest that changing the weapon itself may not produce the effects the Army was looking for, the CNA report said.”
“Last summer, after over two years of evaluation, the Army called off its competition”
Haters gonna hate. I think the above statement says it best. The M-4 carbine more than held its own among 8 newly designed weapons. One as in 1 of the weapons actually may have done better in One (1) of the tests. OMG! The sky is falling.
Oh, and they “called off the test!!!!” after 2 dang years. I think that’s long enough.
I was issued a BAR during part of our infantry training and I have to agree with your Dad; fantastic weapon. Accurate, steady, superbly controllable, powerful, reliable. If I coulda carried one of those in Vietnam, I would have..
Vested interests will be served. The “winner” is almost always predetermined. The USA wound up with the Beretta 9mm for a generation as part of a deal with Italy over air bases etc. The SIG blew away the field but the Beretta “won.” That’s how it works. Vested interests will be served.
and this is what they want to do with the economy, rig it
Like with anything else involving government- follow the money and influence being peddled.
