Dedication plaques at two Midlothian elementary schools will be replaced because they reference God and the Holy Christian Church.
Superintendent Jerome Stewart confirmed the plaques at Mountain Peak Elementary and Longbranch Elementary are covered up for now.
Over the summer, someone complained about the plaque at Mountain Peak to the Freedom from Religion Foundation. After doing some research, the organization sent a letter to the Midlothian ISD.
The 2-by-3-foot display next to the front entrance of the school included two Latin crosses and read, Dedicated in the year of our Lord 1997 to the education of God's children and to their faithful teachers in the name of the Holy Christian Church - Soli Deo Gloria."
The Freedom from Religion Foundation said it offends the constitution because it specifically promotes The Holy Christian Church and contains a Latin phrase the means Glory to God alone.
Rather than risk legal action, the district decided to get rid of the plaques. Stewart said both the plaque at Mountain Peak and a similar one at Longbranch will be replaced because of their questionable constitutional nature.
New plaques will be installed sometime this school year, he said.
The bottom line is it's a public school and it's a public school district and they can't endorse the message that's on that plaque, said Liz Cavell, an attorney with the Freedom from Religion Foundation.
Parents held a prayer circle Tuesday night to protest the decision.
About 150 parents showed up at the event at Mountain Peak Elementary. Many of them found out about the decision on the plaques via a Facebook page called Bring Back the Plaque.
Via Bring Back the Plaque, a peaceful demonstration was also organized for Thursday morning outside the district's administration building.
A huge crowd is also expected at the next school board meeting on Sept. 15.
"I know a lot of Christians are upset, but it's a blow to Muslims, atheists, whoever, said parent David Davlin. If you're religious at all, it's a blow to you saying you can't be religious here."
With all the problems the public schools have, the staff of this one has nothing better to do than this?
Meanwhile, the parents were told about the new mandatory sexual education and instruction classes that their kids will be participating in.
I wonder how many of them will be calling on God if something happens.
Does FFRF sue for money when they threaten a suit, or are they only suing to have the plaque removed? Someone with deep pockets needs to fight these fascists and we need to see where they get their funding.
I know everything that is happening is bible prophecy, I just wish people would wise up to it.
Can you imagine if a plaque urged all to celebrate Diversity and indicated it was a safe zone for homosexuality? That of course would be OK. But any mention of the Almighty is verboten.......
What are these atheists afraid of? Somebody might take a message about God or religion to hearyourt, and become interested and start reading The Bible????

Basically 22 people with two ass clowns paid over $100,000 a year driving the agenda on religious freedom...
I wish someone would counter sue them and break them...

Not surprising Richard Dawkins is on the board...
A poor choice of words???
This is in Midlothian, TEXAS. Home of Chris Kyle.
How does this POS organization even get legal standing?
The vice just keeps getting tighter. Stand!!
I only want to know one thing. What is the name of the person who complained? Aren’t we supposed to be faced with our accuser? I hate these cowards who hide behind the government or an organization. You got a beef? Be a man and stand up and say so!
One person complained. How about the other 99.99999999999% of the others complain about the coverings.
>>How does this POS organization even get legal standing?
I don’t know. They aren’t even that big or rich. They could be bankrupted in a short time if people would just stand and fight them. Of course, public schools and universities are run by secular humanists who agree with the FFRF (when it comes to Christianity). They’ll build a gold-plated footbath for some muzzies, but a 50 year old plaque that mentions God has to go.
People leave their kids in government schools for the subsidized babysitting. I wonder how much it will take to make them stop putting their heads in the sand.
Gutless cowards.
