This is nothing new, old news I recall reading of decades ago. Methane hydrate along the east coast is suspected of having blown up sporadically in the past and could cause a huge disaster if it happened now. But it’s one of those things that might not happen for a million years so we can relax. Also have read of other nations intending to farm it for energy (Japan). Just hope the farming doesn’t prematurely cause a blowout.

One of those “scientific” articles complaining that Japan will make it game over with “global warming” when they exploit methane hydrate over the next five years.
“56 million years ago, an estimated 2,500 gigatons of carbon were released into the atmosphere likely came from a collapse of methane hydrate reserves”
I say if it’s there, it was intended for us to use it. More power to Japan for doing it.
