Last month, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) proposed the SWEET Act, an excise tax on sweetened beverages. The tax, which has been billed as a national soda tax, would lay a one-cent duty on every teaspoon of sugar in soft drinks and other beverages. The proposal is intended "to curb obesity, diabetes, and the resulting health care costs."
Why is this a good idea?
When a two-liter cola is 99 cents and blueberries are over three dollars, something has gone very wrong, DeLauro told attendees.
For the record, a pint of blueberries contains more than 40g of sugar. Thats about as much sugar as youll find in a pint of soda.
----SNIP----
But the handful of soda tax supporters may be insulated from these facts, given the echo chamber in which they reside. For example, Rep. DeLauro publicly announced her intentions to introduce the tax during a videotaped appearance at the Center for Science in the Public Interests insiders-only soda summit in June, shortly before a New York State court sounded the death knell for New York Citys reviled soda ban. (The fact one New York City health department official who spoke at the soda summit described the citys appeal as critical for future efforts by the department to take action can only be described as good news for those who think the citys future efforts shouldnt include such buffoonery.)
The CSPI summit was co-sponsored by former New York City mayor Michael Bloombergs philanthropic arm. DeLauros proposed tax is similar to a one-peso-per-liter tax that took effect this year in Mexico. That tax became law thanks to a $10 million donation from the same Bloomberg charity that co-sponsored the CSPI soda summit.

I always thought Rosa Delauro was proof that the Wicked Witch of the West did not die childless.
Years ago she & her fellow feminazis in the House attempted to invade NRA headquarters in northern Virginia. Police reminded them that they were on private property & could face arrest.
(Would like to be able to report that they then screamed “Property is theft!!” as they stormed off.)
What's wrong is you should not have power you crazy nut.
It’s been about three years. So far, so good. I got nothing against artificial sweeteners.
IIRC, most of the studies which made the link between artificial sweeteners and health effects had the rats in the experiments consuming the equivalent of about 40 cases of diet drinks a day. It would probably be fatal but the cause of death would be a bladder explosion.
Put her face on every can of soda and sales will cease that day.
Forget the fact that taxing soda has nothing to do with the price of blueberries. Once again Democrats are ignorant of economics, but know full well how to extract cash from our pockets to their own benefit.
Bastards.
What is she gonna say/do when they pass a 5% ugly tax?
——Theres no sugar in coke. They use HFCS.——
Not if that matters....
Sugar will be reported like guns.... Every gun is an “assault weapon”....
Every form of sugar is taxable sugar...
-——why should a person have to give up sugar and be forced to ingest artificial sweeteners?-——
I almost have come to the conclusion that artificial sweeteners may be worse for your health than HFCS ...
-——would lay a one-cent duty on every teaspoon of sugar in soft drinks and other beverages-——
The tax on a 2 liter coke would be $.57 per bottle...
Having spent 25 years in the business (screen name) I can tell you that type of tax levy would do exactly what the punitive tax on cigar industry did...kill it....
It would cost 10’s of thousands of lost jobs among many other repercussions ....
I would almost guarantee the taxes collected would not even break even....
Well, if you only expect to last a few years, I guess it won’t matter, but artificial sweeteners are among the worst abuses of your body.
That is why they are promoted. Killing us off is the primary goal of the elite here.
The same idiots that want to control your intake of Soda, and Tobacco, are (mostly) the same people that want to cut back on the drug war, and to legalize Marijuana.
Are you a time traveler?
This would help the makers of soda pop kits but hurt bottled soda companies who would have to cut staffing to compensate for falling sales. Welcome back FIZZIES (or will they be taxed as well).
“The proposal is intended “to curb obesity, diabetes, and the resulting health care costs.””
This of course is exactly the kind of nanny state dictatorial behavior management when the Federal Government trys to take over healthcare it will only get worse as we lose more and more freedom to Washington unending crusade against the fundamentals of human nature itself.
Thanks for the ping!
I think its great. So many conservatives cheer at tobacco taxes also. I say we have a weigh in on April 15 and tax fat. iQ test also and tax stupid. Mirrors and tax ugly..
You can’t say yes to nanny state when it starts and then turn back.
I always remember a friend of my dad being so pro cigarette tax. I told him his fat ass was next. I told him I could quit smoking before he could loose 100 pounds. He didn’t think a 20 year old “boy” should talk to him that way. I told him this boy understood the slippery slope we were on.
