THIS PAGE has for many years urged the local football team to change its name. The term Redskins, we wrote in 1992, is really pretty offensive. The team owner then, Jack Kent Cooke, disagreed, and the owner now, Daniel M. Snyder, disagrees, too. But the matter seems clearer to us now than ever, and while we wait for the National Football League to catch up with thoughtful opinion and common decency, we have decided that, except when it is essential for clarity or effect, we will no longer use the slur ourselves. Thats the standard we apply to all offensive vocabulary, and the team name unquestionably offends not only many Native Americans but many other Americans, too.
We were impressed this week by the quiet integrity of Mike Carey, who recently retired after 19 seasons as one of the NFLs most respected referees. As recounted by Post columnist Mike Wise, Mr. Carey asked the league not to assign him to officiate any Washington games and, since 2006, the league granted his request. He never made any announcement about it. It just became clear to me that to be in the middle of the field, where something disrespectful is happening, was probably not the best thing for me, Mr. Carey said. . .

[I assume the Sports Section will still use Redskins.]
Yes. And the sports section probably gets 50 times more readers than the editorial page.
And so go the fools, stomping their little feet and demanding that we care what they think.
So how is that going to work if they have an editorial about changing the team name.
“We support changing the name of the Washington football team from its’ current name to a new one....”
Hmmmm.
I first learned of the Washington Redskins by listening to them on our Philco “Cathedral” radio (Wish I had been smart enough to hang on to that one!) in the early 1950s.
I was 8 or 9 years old, and the Redskins were “my” team until Dan Snyder bought them. I was living in the DC area when he became the owner, and remember well all of his “I am the smartest guy in the football world” screwups.
I didn’t like him then, and I don’t like him now, but I will tell you that I fully support him giving the finger to the PC crowd on this one!
He is right to fight for the name Redskins! I am part (1/8) Cherokee on my dad’s side of the family, and I am not offended at all by the Redskins name.
Pound sand, LIEberals1 There are a hellofalot of problems that need solving in Washington, DC!
This is not one of them!
They also announced that they will now be using the city names Stalingrad and Leningrad again.
Will they ship the Lenin statue from Seattle to there?
I will no longer refer to that team by the name ‘Redskins’. Instead, I’m going to arbitrarily update the name to the “Washington Casino Operators”.
If WaPo wasn’t a bunch of self-serving hypocrites, they’d put their money where their mouth is and refuse ALL mention of the dreaded, evil, offensive, fascist, racist Washington Redskins, including complete banishment from their sports section and refusal of all advertising. In fact, the word “Redskins” would be completely banned and totally censored in all online commentary as well.
Short of the above strictures, their editorializing against the word “Redskins” is nothing more than pathetic huffing, puffing and pandering.
(BTW, what’s ya’ll’s stance on Red Man tobacco? For it or agin it?
I’m sure they’ll give a rats rear end. Who reads that POS paper anyways? Liberals.
I swear, if the moron REDSKINS had not done the “hands up” sympathy bull**** to symbolize the ASSAILANT of Officer Darren Wilson, I might have bought a REDSKINS shirt or two just to wear around the liberals in my town....just to tick them off.
I totally agree .and I would also start rumors about the possibility of moving a team to a city with a less hostile Work environment.
Why? Because the opposition has become more shrill? Nothing else has changed in the situation.
(actually, that was as of c. 1973)
That I could believe ..
Hail to the locals.
Won’t say their name,
But we’ll get angry
If they lose this game.
“I would not assume that .”
This is an easy one to fix. If Redskins fans who subscribe to the Washington Post would simply cancel their subscriptions I suspect that Post management would reconsider asap.
Amen to that. Self-righteousness mixed with snippiness. They're still trying to social-climb with the Cabots and Lodges and Peabodys.
What are they going to do?
Call them “The R-words”?
WHO CARES?
Dear Wapo,
Please go pound sand; and STFU! Who give a rat’s butt what YOU think?! This is no longer 1960. You no longer control what information gets published. The REAL people, the ones who actually make the Country work are onto you. They think for themselves and no longer believe or trust your male bovine feces! The low information layabouts don’t read your drivel, either! So you can dry up and blow away. You will not be missed!
