Robots could murder us out of KINDNESS unless they are taught the value of human life

The warning was made by Amsterdam-based engineer, Nell Watson Speaking at a conference in Sweden, she said robots could decide that the greatest compassion to humans as a race is to get rid of everyone Ms Watson said computer chips could soon have the same level of brain power as a bumblebee – allowing them to analyse social situations 'Machines are going to be aware of the environments around them and, to a small extent, they're going to be aware of themselves,' she said Her comments follow tweets by Tesla-founder, Elon Musk, earlier this month who said AI could be more dangerous than nuclear weapons

Future generations could be exterminated by Terminator-style robots unless machines are taught the value of human life.

This is the stark warning made by Amsterdam-based engineer Nell Watson, who believes droids could kill humans out of both malice and kindness.

Teaching machines to be kind is not enough, she says, as robots could decide that the greatest compassion to humans as a race is to get rid of everyone to end suffering.

'The most important work of our lifetime is to ensure that machines are capable of understanding human value,' she said at the recent 'Conference by Media Evolution' in Sweden.

'It is those values that will ensure machines don't end up killing us out of kindness.'

Ms Watson claims computer chips could soon have the same level of brain power as a bumblebee – allowing them to analyse social situations and their environment.

'Machines are going to be aware of the environments around them and, to a small extent, they're going to be aware of themselves,' said Ms Watson, who is also the chief executive of body scanning firm Poikos.

I'm counting on the first robots having a really juvenile sense of humor... Hey, Robby, did ya’ hear the one about the lawnmower?... Should keep me in their good graces for a while.

Why don’t we worry about the humans with the defective squishyware between their ears who like decapitating others of their kind before we worry about 22nd century malware in home automation devices.

Now if only we could teach something similar to criminal illegal aliens who cross the border with apparent impunity.

Hard to believe he started all that thought process (or at least first shared it with the public) clear back in 1939. Think of the level of technology he had available to him to pull together those ideas.

Sounds just like the plot of the movie I Robot.

It is many decades older than that movie.

I see 2 choices, drawn from science fiction.

First, Issac Asimov’s three laws of robotics, which first says you don’t harm a human.

Second option, thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind, from the Frank Herbert Dune series.

What is interesting is that many of the same people who say there is no God have adopted the idea of the singularity and all powerful, all wise AI and want to create it so that something better than us can solve all our problems AND maybe let them upload their brains to experience artificial heaven and immortality.
AKA, there is no God, but we want to create one.

Asimov covered this years and years ago.

And covered it well.

The “I Robot” movie didn’t even come close to any of the books, however...but then again, it’s from H-wood.

"There is a Doctor Who episode where the robots do exactly that and say that it is a kindness."

Isn't that pretty much the theme of every Dr. Who episode?

Are the robots going to waste everyone all at one time? I think after the first few murders the humans might get a clue.

And once the humans were all snuffed, who would generate the power to recharge the bots? Sounds like a scenario for a century from now, when bots might actually be doing and running EVERYTHING.

That will not happen. Christ will return in a very short while. The generation that witnessed the rebirth of Israel in 1948 will not completely pass from the scene before Christ returns.

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

That part has all sorts of potential unintended consequences ... as the robots try to prevent us from harming each other or ourselves.
