Is Ferguson about class or culture? (Get's down to the real problem behind it all)

And that goes to the heart of the real issue. It isn’t just about class; it is also about culture. There is an attitude in some communities of “you owe me”, an attitude that when one is growing up one’s parents don’t work or are always between jobs, always trying to “get from the man what was taken.” One isn’t encouraged at age 15 to save money and get a job, but rather to “take.” And we saw that attitude in the Michael Brown video where he goes into a shop and takes “what’s his” and throws the elderly owner out of the way.

There are different cultures. There is the culture of the middle-aged owner of that shop, who probably worked from a young age; and the attitude of Michael Brown who stole cigars and pushed those who dared oppose him out of his way.

I saw that growing up in Maine, which is one of the poorer states in the union and is predominantly white. There are sub-cultures of people who never work who are always sitting around drinking and who are in and out of law enforcement “problems.” And there are people who are raised from a young age to work hard.

You must be a GOP stalwart

I just make a statement inferring that most of us here do not belong to any group think, and you call me a GOP stalwart.???

I might add that reading comprehension is not very good here either..

I have said before that it is only the tremendous productivity of modern agriculture and industry that allows the current situation to exist. If we tried to go back to the methods used in the thirties for production it would become immediately obvious that we are actually in a far worse situation than in the thirties because so great a percentage of modern America is incapable of providing for themselves in any way. We have college graduates pushing forty who are still depending on family to manage their affairs and support them financially. The average recent college graduate in his or her twenties is less capable of surviving in a real SHTF situation than a twelve year old of 1930. Anyone who thinks I exaggerate should look around and smell the coffee. There is no way we could have supported this high a percentage of non-productive and minimally productive people in the thirties. Even most of those who consider themselves hard workers now spend their workday as one long coffee break in comparison to how people used to work. I was born in 1944 and most of the people I knew growing up who held a forty or more hour a week job in a factory or in construction also worked a small farm in their “spare time”. I started doing chores before I ever entered first grade and was a farm hand by age ten or so, my older brother and I took over the farm work because my father worked residential construction five days a week and my mother worked seven days a week for much of the year, taking care of the house, picking and canning vegetables, cooking, washing clothes etc.

We are one or two blown out bridges over the Mississippi from disaster. The modern grid is super productive but also far more vulnerable to disruption than the old ways.

Thomas Sowell has a whole list of white cultures where a particular group with high rates of violent crime got their act together and headed toward national norms. They were not violent because they were white. They were violent because of culture.

Same is true today. Nothing wrong with black people’s genes. Lot of things wrong with some black people’s attitudes and beliefs.

I have seen real poverty, but even in the poorest of poor places I have been in deepest Africa, I have never seen the festering cultural rot of american inner cities.

Excellent insight.

In my days as a travel writer, I saw the awful poverty stricken slums of Manila, and also beautiful downtown Havana. Tho the Filipinos were in deeper poverty, they at least had hope -- if they sold two cans of beans today, maybe tomorrow they'd sell three and eventually have a little store. But in Havana, if you sold a can of beans you would be arrested. The hideous frustration of that is soul killing.

And now, we're killing hope here.

Thug culture wouldn’t be as strong as it is if the liberal American Establishment weren’t pounding into all our children’s ears how massively racist every inch of American history and society is.

Wll, there are a lot of alcoholics who are not Native Americans, but no one is going to convince me that alcoholism among them is not genetic.

That part is true, as is your statement about height and other physical attributes of a person.

The parenting in the black community is actually worse then that. I’ve seen this over and over. Kid acts up, yells, demands stuff, runs wild, nothing happens. This happens over and over. Then the kid does something real minor, and mom hauls off and smacks the kid, yells obscenities at kid. The response to the behaviors is completely random. Most of the time nothing, then without warning blam, overkill.

I've seen that same behavior many times, exactly the way you describe it.

It alternates between neglect and apathy to lets arbitrarily overpunish and maybe even abuse the kid. You nailed it. It would be hard to think up a more damaging way to bring up kids.

This is how liberals interpret the extreme violence among black males. Blame the parents, society, demographics. All things that look like they could be changed by money. Other peoples money.

But, those of us who have actually worked with black males charged or convicted of violent crime (me in the court system), see it in their eyes. It is in the eyes: a dead, sociopathic look. I can pick them out across the room.

And, there are a lot more white males who grew up with horrible parents, disfunctionality, poverty, and crummy schools. And, yet the likelihood of a black male committing a violent crime is 13 to 16 times that of a white male.

It is a racial thing. Sorry to say, but there is no escaping it. And, no solution for it.
