Last Thursday, the rapper Nelly went on the air of his hometown hip-hop radio station, St. Louis's Hot 104.1, to announce a college scholarship fund for local teens in honor of Michael Brown, the unarmed black 18-year-old killed by a policeman earlier this month. Nelly also took the opportunity to mock the looters who have flourished since Brown's death, saying, "We don

How would the average African-American have fared, over history, if we had never brought their ancestors over to this country and they therefore ended up born and raised in Africa? Well, the kids wouldn't be wearing $200 Air Jordans while they played stolen video games on an HDTV in the family mud hut.

Julia Ioffe needs to understand white people spend about as much time thinking about black people as black people spend thinking about American Indians.
Unless black people are in our faces, knocking us out, stealing money from us or burning down stores we don't think about them much.
Does Julia Ioffe care how American Indians live? Do she and her friends discuss American Indians at the dinner table? Or how they dress? Their oppression? Probably not.
We're the same.
Race is discussed here at FreeRepublic because it's political. But in my real life it's almost never discussed. Can Julia Ioffe say the same?

I was bothered by this conclusion:
Gates is perceived as respectable for another reason, too: He prefers sportcoats to baggy pants. On that day in 2009, he was wearing a red polo and dark slacks, and still he was cuffed and thrown in jail. No amount of grooming changed the fact that he was a black man in America.
Gates made a dramatic scene out of what could have been a relatively tranquil event. He could have calmly offered proof that he lived there, but instead went full-blown drama and ran his mouth. His troubles are rooted not in his melanin, but in his need to live out some drama.
