That was my thought as well - Wilson literally tried to 'wing' Brown to deter him, and only shot to kill once Brown closed. Given that Brown had already once gone for Wilson's gun, Wilson had no other choice - if Brown reached him, he could knock Wilson down and take his gun.

As happened with Trayvon, once the perp goes for the gun, lethal force becomes fully justified.

Once the officer was struck in the head by Brown lethal force was in play. Most departments in their “use of force” policy recognize that ANY blows to the head are considered lethal force. At that point Wilson was clear to use lethal force to stop Brown.
