Those French planters made the mistake of being a weak minority in Martinique. Many of the ones who could bug out ended up in Louisiana (then the nearest French outpost). The slaves the French brought from Martinique before all Hell broke loose there were primarily responsible for New Orleans' "voodoo" folklore.
A similar revolt can only get so far here, they don't have the numbers to sustain it.
The same mistake everywhere; hire a volatile low IQ race to bring in and pick the crops and allow themselves to be outnumbered. Then wonder why things go badly. As for voodoo, we have slavery to blame for that as well.
