On race, America has far to go. Ferguson won't be the last flash point
The Manchester Guardian ^ | August 16, 2014 | Farai Chideya

The events in Missouri spring from America's deeply embedded segregation and black economic deprivation.

I spent my very early years in New York, living a very multiracial Sesame Street life, a big swinging bellbottom of a childhood. And then our family moved to Baltimore and the iron curtain of the "colour line" fell. I felt that I had moved from the 1970s through a time warp where black and white were the only two colours and never the twain shall socially meet.

I grew to understand what the 50s were actually like in Baltimore, when my mother, for example, was permitted to buy clothes from the major department store but not try them on. (Heaven forfend some black lady should be in the dressing room, right? You know they leave a residue of blackness on the clothes.)

America has never had one racial reality, but a series of them strung together from San Antonio to Pittsburgh to Appalachia. What we are seeing in Ferguson, Missouri, is the result of life in a specific type of heavily racialised zone. Yes, a city such as New York, where a black man was recently choked to death by police officers, has its own very clear forms of racialisation and it's a national issue. But the police killing, last week, of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teen in Ferguson has sparked national protests because it represents a specific type of racialisation. This is of the majority black city, big or small, with a white economic and political power structure.

I grew up with mayor William Donald Schaefer, who presided over Baltimore from 1971-1987, an unusually long stretch....

No. "America" does not have far to go; lawless hoodrats/inner-city thugs stuck on the Democrat and Government "gimmedat" plantation have far to go.
I notice Col. West, Thomas Sowell, Justice Thomas (SCOTUS) have seemed to go "far" all on their own; but I guess they are not "black enough" for this rather well fed woman.

“On race, America has far to go”

To get to where? Where no other nation is?

Minorities think this place sucks so bad, then go somewhere where the people there will give even less f*cks that your ancestor you cant even name was a slave.

“The events in Missouri spring from America’s deeply embedded segregation and black economic deprivation.”

So the obvious answer is to burn down the places that employee the black people.

Funny how blacks never seem to have any responsibility in ‘race relations’

They won’t leave, despite all the wailing and gnashing of teeth. Deep down, most of them know they’ve got a good thing going versus their cousins in Africa, the Caribbean, South America and Arabia.

Farai Chideya is part of the precipitate ...

Because she sure as heck isn't part of the solution.

"Black America" needs to get the chip off its collective shoulder, quit living as a parasite class, get off its collective duff and EARN a living.

It hasn't been the '50s for a long time. Get over the poor victim crap already.

I think she’s on to something there. Like, in my neighborhood, I’m always counseling the white boy thugs. I tell them to stop wearing their pants down below their underwear. I tell them to stop stealing Swisher Sweets and for goodness sakes stop punching the cops. But they just don’t listen! Land sakes alive!

"But the police killing, last week, of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teen in Ferguson has sparked national protests because it represents a specific type of racialisation."

Dear Author Farai Chideya, you are full of it. Unarmed black teen - you do not know the circumstances of the shooting. The witness that the media has run with, turns out to be Brown's accomplice in the strong arm robbery. He's a thug and a liar. A friend of the officer involved says that Big Mike, the gentle giant after one assault on the officer, was racing toward the officer to attack him again. Trayvon Martin first name was changed to "unarmed teenager", even though he was using his fists to beak a guys head into the cement.

But all the facts have not come out, your piece is BS and you're prejudiced. You've prejudged this case and made wild assumptions and implications of how this somehow affects the entire US of A.

In my opinion, this propaganda in the Brown case is about agitating the Black population in order to get them to come out and vote in November. That's my opinion and I think I can back it better than you can back up your drivel.

All of these police shootings of young Black men would stop immediately, if young Black men gave up their criminal activity. How about that for a solution? Otherwise what, give young Black men a free pass to commit crimes?

How do “victims” bear any responsibility?
