This Indictment Of Rick Perry Is Unbelievably Ridiculous (says a liberal writer)
New York Magazine (bit tip o'the hat to Twitchy) ^ | 08/16/14 | Jonathan Chait

Posted on 08/16/2014 1:51:00 PM PDT by jocon307

They say a prosecutor could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich, and this always seemed like hyperbole, until Friday night a Texas grand jury announced an indictment of governor Rick Perry. The “crime” for which Perry faces a sentence of 5 to 99 years in prison is vetoing funding for a state agency. The conventions of reporting — which treat the fact of an indictment as the primary news, and its merit as a secondary analytic question — make it difficult for people reading the news to grasp just how farfetched this indictment is.

A very good piece, concise and informative. Per Twitchy Chait was formerly the editor of The New Republic, so I think his liberal bona fides are in good order.

Perry is done. This was a Bush family political hit, it was outsourced by the Austin DA to Bush family political appointees. Read about McCrum bit.

FR’s are dupes if they think the Dems were the one’s pushing this.

The left has engaged in rewriting the past regarding Clinton’s impeachment for perjury and subornation of perjury as simply pursing a “BJ.”
Perry’s team needs to make sure this indictment is seen as retaliation by an angry, embarrassed, embittered, partisan drunkard perpetuating a fraud on the court.

I am not a fan of Rick Perry but I’m in his corner on this; the indictment is completely bogus.

This was a political drive by hit from the progressive radicals in the democratic party in Austin. Oh, yea I wouldn’t be surprised if some rinos slipped the ace card into the mix. We know they don’t like anyone that may get into the way of the establishment’s choices. But, the dems in Austin’s fingerprints are all over this one.

Texas should move the capitol out of Austin. I’ve been there a few times and, seriously, I don’t know what the fuss is about. It’s a fairly dirty, old town with sprawling suburbs. The university is just a magnet for liberals, hipsters and their fellow travelers. I can imagine what the grand jury looked like....

Perry is nothing if not establishment. He was a dem that Rove recruited after Perry worked for Gore.

He's not a conservative, he is now a Republican.

I have no use for Perry, and am glad he's not running for governor this year. That said, this is more political BS from Travis County Prosecutor's office. They need to go away. They already destroyed Tom Delay.

Then how come tweets from national dnc insiders were broadcast minutes after the announcement was made? Don't spew crap you don't know anything about. Hell, you may not even be a Texan!

If we played the game the same way, by noon Monday there would be 101 criminal indictments of Obama for abuse of power. Followed by demands that he immediately resign since he would be by far the most-indicted president in American history.

Thank You Travis County for again demonstrating how MEAN and VINDICTIVE the Democratic Party can be! We have seen that with Obummer and his programs that have declared war on his enemies, and this is just another facet of the FLAWED PERSONA of the Democrats!

This very public display can only help boost Rick Perry and the Republicans in general. That is why you see Liberals like Chait running away from it.

Travis County Loonies!

One of the author's point is the MSM will treat this as the political death of Rick Perry.

...regardless of the ridiculousness.

A Texas Democrat DA with a rabid grudge is a dangerous and vengeful law enforcement officer.

It will be interesting if Karl Rove's hit machine was in any way involved with these Austin DAs since Jeb Bush looks likely to run for President and Perry is looking so strong in light of sending the National Guard to the border.

Here is the script:

1. Democrat official does something completely irresponsible.
2. Higher level Republican official tries to hold her accountable and requests her resignation.
3. Democrat digs in and yells unfair — refuses to resign.
4. Republican imposes consequences
5. Democrat uses the legal system to indict Republican
6. Republican goes to jail
7. Democrat becomes a hero and is promoted
