She looked so terrific and strong for such a long time that it was easy to imagine Lauren Bacall might just hang around forever. And who wouldn’t want her to, for the pleasure of hearing her firing off smart, unvarnished remarks about old Hollywood in that husky voice? But the end came at last on Tuesday, when the 89-year-old actress died from a stroke at her home, according to a report on TMZ.

It’s the smoking that killed her! It’s so obvious!

First time I saw Key Largo, I fell in love.

I loved Humphrey Bogart in that movie too.

Geez, the way she is sucking on that cigarette, I’ll bet she could suck the chrome off of Bogey’s trailer hitch.

I’m just looking a close grouping of deaths. Thus we have August 8, 11, & 12. For Murphy, Williams & Bacall.

Please slap yourself for me. I'd do it myself if it weren't for the fact that I only know you from the Internet.

Wow! She must be the last surviving actor from Gone with the Wind?

Maureen O'Hara is still alive??

Ok, I could SWEAR I read of her dying a year or two ago. And I even recall it was here on FR that I heard she'd passed! Maybe it was a hoax... or all a crazy dream on my part?

Regardless, I'm sorry for Bacall's passing and also glad to know O'Hara is still among us!

Just my guess and I can’t back it up with facts but Bacall struck me as a Joseph Stalin type and Lucille Ball as more of a Kim Philby type.

Heard that bit about threes all my life, sometimes it seems so real, like when one of my aunts died and her son, my first cousin just a year younger than I, died four days later, he couldn’t attend his mother’s funeral because he was terminal with a brain tumor and when I came home from his funeral the first thing I see on TV news is that my next door neighbor had died in the crash of a small plane that he was piloting. It really was a four though because a fourteen year old boy was also killed in the plane crash, my neighbor had flown to the farm where the boy lived, he landed there and then took the boy’s sister up and flew her around and then took the boy up and the engine died just high enough off the ground on takeoff to be fatal.

Thank you. Yes, I clearly remember thinking "oh no, Maggie's gone!" That being her role in the original Parent Trap movie -- hey, what can I say, I was born in 1967! I also remember her from one of my dad's favorite John Wayne movies but I can't remember which. (sad, I know). Bacall -- Key Largo is the one that comes to mind.

“The Shootist”. Lauren Bacall co-starred with John Wayne. Excellent flick.

(Oh I know who number 3 was.....John Wayne!! Oh they say there is a ‘set amount of time’ for their 3 bullsqueeze? Opps, sorry).

O'Hara was gorgeous in Parent Trap. Wayne/O'Hara movies were McLintock!, The Quiet Man and Big Jake.

I love old movies but never cared for Bacall.

You forgot to mention she was going to rot in hell. After all, had she turned to God, she would not have had a stroke. /s

Seriously, she was a talented actress and a very beautiful woman. May she rest in peace.

I want to say McLintock but I'm not sure. The scene I most remember is Wayne and O'Hara in a log cabin; they're fighting/bickering and he grabs her to him and gives her a huge kiss. Not sure if that narrows it down...? Not that it matters, and this is a Bacall thread, anyway! LOL
