I wasn't happy with Garp, either and it is my favorite as well. To be fair, it wasn't William's fault, no one could do an adaptation of that book that would do it justice.

Garp was one of two movies I walked out of. But it wasn’t Williams’ fault. It was just a bad movie.
I remember him appearing on Johnny Carson; he was absolutely crazy and went on a five minute non-stop stream of consciousness. It was one of the funniest live performances I’ve ever seen. Carson could not stop laughing.
Genius has its dark side. RIP Mr. Williams.
