Most rational people, when faced with the grim prospect of having contracted a nearly always fatal disease and being offered an experimental treatment with the explanation of, "This may or may not help, but even if it does not cure YOU, we will learn more to help others" will certainly choose taking the risk of accepting the unknown treatment.
