Amr Moussa hints at Egypt incursion into Libya

The Egyptian government should consider a military solution for the unrest in Libya, Amr Moussa said in a statement issued Sunday.

The former Egyptian foreign minister raised speculation that Egypt is considering an armed incursion into Libya, where fierce fighting continues between rebel groups and security forces.

The current unrest in Libya, Egypt’s neigbour to the west, poses threats to Egyptian national security, the statement added.

"The situation in Libya is a major concern for Egypt, Libya's neighboring countries, and the Arab world at large," Moussa said.

"Statelets, sects and extremist factions in Libya directly threaten Egypt's national security. I call for a broad public debate to sensitize public opinion to the risks, and to build the necessary support in case we have to exercise our right to self-defence."

Egypt's foreign affairs spokesman declined to comment on Moussa's statement.

These remarks are given great weight considering Moussa’s high profile in Egyptian politics, in addition to his close ties with President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi. His statements are an indicator that an Egyptian military operation in Libya is on the table.

It is actually encouraging that the same Egyptians which he underminded might clean up this mess.

Perhaps Egypt could invade just Libya.

Egypt sure could use the oil revenue, Libya could use the stability imposed by the Egyptian Government and the diversion of Egyptian military assets to the West help deter any Egyptian disputes with Israel.

All benefit from the destruction of the Muslim Brotherhood in Libya, especially the Libyans.

Ordinarily this would be a worst case geo political scenario , but in these days of Obama Bizzaro World , it's a plan full of win and the best outcome we can possibly hope for in the region.

If Egypt could drive out the jihadis and subdue them, that would be great.

But I have serious doubts that Egypt can successfully do that.

Or . . . the Libyan rebel forces who have been very careful not to damage the oil fields (and this includes underground as well as above ground — you CAN irreparably damage the rock structures below ground and drive oil deeper so it becomes nat gas and loses 90% of its value) might look at each other and say . . . Libyans are not going to benefit from this oil. Egyptians are.

So no reason for us to allow anyone at all to have it.
