McConnell faces toughest test
The Hill ^

PADUCAH, Ky. — Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) can almost taste becoming Senate majority leader, but first he has to make sure he isn’t the Republican who costs the GOP its shot at chamber control.

His strengths and weaknesses were on full display in his battle against Alison Lundergan Grimes this weekend, underscoring just how tough his race is against the Democrat.

My dream scenario……winning the Senate on the same night McConnell gets beat by a Dem. Now THAT would be delicious!!!

When I see messages about “Removing this RINO” when the only alternative is a Democrat vote for Harry Reid, I wonder if the messenger is really a Democrat.

Damn shame he wasn’t removed in the republican primary. Seems conservatives would have found a better challenger. Now we’ve got conservatives wanting an Obama lovin’ Clinton hugging abortion backing obamacare supporting democrat.

Should have put up for the primary. Instead, they backed a clown show.

Yes indeed. Taking control of the Senate loses a whole lot of meaning if McConnell is the Majority Leader. Time for Cruz (or Sessions).

Agreed. They had the best opportunity to remove Mitch during the primary but they fumbled. Now they want to throw the game.

They backed a clown show that spoke at a cock fighting group and said he didn’t even know it was a cockfighting group. He said some other stupid things too.

They should have picked a better conservative to back when it made more sense.

When McConnell votes to support Harry Reid's agenda (which he has, with many cloture votes), I have to wonder if those supporting McConnell aren't socialists.

The general rule about supporting the better candidate in the General election requires some nuance when ousting him ensures a better Majority Leader.

…or looked at another way…..taking control of the Senate WHILE McConnell loses GAINS A TON OF MEANING for the Cruz wing of the party!!

One step at a time. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Yes they needed a better candidate to oust McC no chin, no guts. BUT I’ll take McC no chin, no guts over a Dem any day.

At least McC is on our side some of the time AND we need to win the senate. See my tag line before some start flaming me.

One step at a time.... Need more Cruz’s and way less McConnells but voting Dem is NOT the answer. Geesh. IMHO.

Also, I wonder if the loser candidate the tea party backed isn’t behind a lot of this. He’s bitter and doesn’t care what happens after that.

That said, I wouldn’t mind seeing mitch take a fall if I was assured republicans would take the senate.

Indeed. McConnell must be removed from his so called leadership position and making him Majority Leader would be a disaster. Let us pray that the Pubs take the senate and that McConnell takes a well deserved permanent leave of absence.

Mitch does not support Harry Reid. He speaks out on the floor ofn the senate against Reid and Obama. I too wonder if the rhino haters are democrats acting like tea party people. I worked along side tea party people in the last presidential election. They supported Mitt Romney once he became the nominee. Do you even live in Kentucky? We love Mitch here. The senate republicans are outnumbered in the senate and their hands are tied. The republicans in the house and that includes the tea party people, because without the republicans the tea party cannont do anything either. We must all stick together if we truly want to get things done.

Serious question. Is EVERY GOP incumbent due another term in November regardless of their performance in office? How do voters ever hold an incumbent like Cochran accountable if they can use their crony influence and money to sneak by in a primary every time.

I generally will vote for the GOP in every general election, but if we can’t risk a few broken eggs, how do we ever get an omelette we want? In 2010 and 2012 we were able to pick off one incumbent in each primary, and won a number of open nominations (as well as scaring a few people in each party into retirement rather than reelection). This cycle, we’ve picked up a couple good nominations in open seats but lost others, and so far the DC apparatus has completely blocked any incumbent upsets in primaries. If they think they can keep that up, these jerks will NOT be answerable at all between now and their next election.

Sitting out SOME general elections and causing some losses will get their attention. It can’t be all or we are a minority, but if a McConnell or Cochran were to lose, the game changes in our favor. If McConnell can outwardly declare war on conservatives, any media companies who are contracted to challengers, and he wins, what does that mean? Senators will screw the voters, upstart candidates will not get top rate campaign media help. DC wins, and voters lose.

His cloture votes have supported Reid's agenda over and over, and then of course, he vote against, for the rubes at home. But without those critical cloture votes, Reid's agenda would be dead.

McConnell supports Reid.

Is McConnell or is he not pushing for Amnesty via some kind of comprehensive Immigration Reform?

Did McConnell support Ted Cruz’s efforts to defund Obamacare?

You may love McConnell but he is a pariah here on Free Republic. Giving him the power to compromise with Obama on every issue, like he is very inclined to do, would be worse than the Status Quo.

If he would resign his position in the Senate leadership, I might even support him monetarily. But he has no business being the leader of the opposition party when he is leading the GOP down the same road the democrats are heading.
