It also survives on surfaces (particularly polished surfaces, like much of our public transportation network!) for up to 5 days or more.

Yea, but generally high mortality bugs lose mortality if they become more transmissible.
It will only take a 3-7.5% mortality rate illness to have a high possibility of sticking a fork in much of western civilization though...
