It’s official: Tesla Motors has broken ground on a stretch of land outside Reno that could serve as the site for its forthcoming $5 billion battery factory.
But not so fast: they’re not the only one in the mix. In a letter to shareholders, Tesla CEO Elon Musk was careful in saying the Reno site “could potentially be” the location for the Gigafactory, expected to create 6,500 jobs.
“Consistent with out strategy to identify and break ground on multiple sites, we continue to evaluate other locations in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas,” Musk wrote.
The news followed weeks of rumors naming Reno as the front-runner in a race to secure the plant.
A post on a blog called “Transport Evolved” recently reported activity at the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, a 106,000-acre site 9 miles east of Reno that currently houses tenants like Wal-Mart and PetSmart. Though speculation pegged the site to Tesla’s Gigafactory, it was unclear whether the company had broken ground anywhere — until Musk’s letter. Other standout cities include Stockton, Calif. and San Antonio, Texas.

VERY VERY weak environmental rules and no income tax.
Reno, Nevada. Must mean Harry Reid’s involved. Elon Musk is as trustworthy as about any Democrat. Ol’ Harry probably has his hand in Musk’s rear pocket.
I wouldn’t doubt that a bit, not much goes on in Nevada that Dingy Harry isn’t aware of if there’s money involved.
texas is better geographically and for a work state.
Musk is the greatest industrialist of his generation.
He is looking for governments to cut red tape to get the factory built as quickly as possible.
Like every major auto factory built in the last 30 years it will get significant tax exemptions and water/tax/road improvements in and around the factory.
Because it is 3000k miles away from the Tesla Factory in Fremont where the car will actually be manufactured.
In the map at post #9 below, the racetrack is just a smidge north of Silver Springs off Hwy 50 on the road between Silver Springs and Fernley.
It’s about where the ‘v’ is in the word ‘Silver’ on that map.
I sure hope this deal goes through. Oh boy, do I.
They would get plenty of workers anxious to escape California. I hope Reno gets it; they could use the infusion of money and jobs.
lithium. Nevada has lots of it. Texas, not so much.
South Carolina doesn’t have lithium deposits.
That show was hilarious. I loved it. Sometimes there is truth in exaggeration.
