The supposedly dead GOP border bill isnt fully dead.
GOP leaders are deciding whether to twist arms or to let it die, a Hill aide told The Daily Caller.
According to congressional staffers, GOP leaders are trying to rewrite the complex, immigration-boosting text so that enough GOP conservatives agree to back the bill.
Earlier Thursday, it was defeated when numerous conservative legislators declined to back the leaderships bill, which would have widened a controversial 2008 loophole and allowed many Mexican youths to apply for green cards.
The bill also would not have stopped the inflow of Central Americans adults, youths and children, say conservative lawmakers.
The House was expected to go on recess at 2: 00 p.m., but leadership aides told members to wait around for another effort to get the bill passed.
IMPORTANT SCHEDULE NOTE: Members are advised that we have a Special GOP Conference Meeting at 3:00 p.m., read the e-mail from the office of Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the GOPs new Majority Leader.
This takes a problem that is bad, and makes it worse, a Hill staffer that wished to remain anonymous told The Daily Caller.
In a dramatic confrontation, the bill was pulled from consideration once the GOP leadership could not find enough votes. However, GOP leaders are preparing to bring a revised version to the floor for a vote late this afternoon.
The GOP bill would have allowed youths from Mexico to use the same unaccompanied alien child loophole in a 2008 law that is currently offered only to minors traveling from non-contiguous countries, such as Honduras and Guatemala, say conservatives and legal analysts......
.....The bill also created a new legal process that pressures judges to grant residency to youths.
Section 103 created a new court procedure that allows each UAC to win a green card unless the immigration judge can show it would be manifestly unjust.
That was just one of five opportunities that any and all UACs would be allowed to seek green cards.
The House bill allows five bites at the apple for those claiming asylum, according to the explanation of the bill.
UACs are screened for credible fear by the Border Patrol; UACs go before an immigration judge in the new court proceeding to determine if they have a claim for relief; UACs are screened by an asylum officer for a credible fear of persecution; UACs then have their asylum case adjudicated by any asylum officer who can only grant relief or refer the case to immigration court; and If a UACs case is referred, the immigration judge will hear their case on the merits de novo, read the explanation.
Also, the bill ensured that the number of youths who can claim to be UACs will rise because of a new definition hidden in a section about the use of the National Guard on the border.
Current law says youths who have parents or guardians in the United States dont get the legal advantage of being called UACs. For example, when children who arrived unaccompanied are released to their parents [living in the United States], they cease to be UACs, said CIS........."
Hellooo, McFly..! Getting' UPPITY, eh..? So you're a JOCK now..? OOoohhh, big TOUGH GUY, now, huh
?
‘This takes a problem that is bad, and makes it worse,’
That is the motto of the Permanent Political Class in DC. ‘You got a problem? We can make it 100x worse, guaranteed’.
Not a joke; this is how the uniparty operates.
The US Chamber of Commerce obviously has a gigantic bottom to kiss up to, and the GOP-e will do anything to please their multinational corporate overlords, and they don’t care if it ends up in the ruination of the United States.
Here’s a question. How does the border patrol know what country the UAC is from? Can they tell the difference between a Mexican, Salvadoran, Guatemalan, etc?
How do they know anything other than what the child tells them?
We are watching the GOP commit suicide. If this passes they will lose the house as well as the senate.
The only way to do that is to cut off the money being used to welcome, transport, and house these people.
Cut it off, Congress --
I thought they had to pass it to know what was in the bill! Imagine that! Someone read it.
The GOPE only surrenders on conservative issues
