Outgoing House Majority Leader Eric Cantor received a standing ovation from most of his fellow Republicans on Tuesday at a closed-door meeting, where a highlight film was played to mark some of his most memorable moments.
"Thank you," said Speaker John Boehner, in an emotional send-off to his top lieutenant, who officially steps down from his top-level post at midnight Thursday to make way for Rep. Kevin McCarthy as the new majority leader.
"He was confident, as I am, that Eric has great things left to do in the future," said Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Pa., of Boehner's remarks.
Cantor, 51, responded with some of his own expressions of appreciation, including to his staff.
Of course, Cantor's departure from the leadership ranks comes not by choice, but as a result of his stunning Virginia primary-election defeat in June to a tea-party-backed challenger. After his primary loss, he announced he would be stepping down as majority leaderand set July 31 as the date.
He says he plans to stick around as a member until the end of this year.
As majority leader since 2011, Cantor has been in charge of setting the House floor-vote agenda, something that sometimes caused tension with conservatives and others.
His term as Boehner's No. 2 also has been markedparticularly in the initial yearswith speculation or perceptions that he was ruthlessly pursing the speaker's post.
But on Tuesday, little of that seemed important.
The closed-door session with colleagues likely represented his last GOP Conference meeting as majority leader, with the House set to break later this week for its recess over August and early September.
What was in the highlight film?

Buh Bye!
He was my daughter’s Rep, and she said that he forgot to come home to his constituency to touch base. She was sorry to see him go.
Yeah, another corporate lobbyist.
Oh Boo Hoo. The poor future multi-millionaire lobbyist.
Sheer arrogance on display. These people think they are far more important than they are.
They need a reality check that they serve at the pleasure of their constituents. When they deviate from that role, they get tossed out on their asses.
This disgusting display of elitist puke reminds me of the Oscars. “These people think they are far more important than they are.”
Speaker Blank Check Boehner has convinced most voters in the Public and US House of Representatives that NOTHING CAN BE DONE to punish B. Hussein Obama for violating the US Constitution unless he is removed from Office by the US Senate.
IOW, Speaker Boehner, by doing nothing, Boehner violates his unique Constitutional Duty to Control the Purse or Impeach Obama, and passes the buck to a Democrat-controlled US Senate that will never Remove Obama from Office.
Obama knows that as long as Boehner stays in as Speaker, then Obama has permission do whatever he wants to do, with no fear of punishment.
Boehner as Speaker is ESSENTIAL to permitting Obama to violate the US Constitution on a near daily basis.
Boehner is the best Speaker of the House that the Democrat Party has ever had.
Removal from Office can only come from the US Senate, and ONLY if the US House Impeaches BEFORE the US Senate even considers whether or not to bring an Impeachment to the Floor of the US Senate.
BTW, stupid people are those people who are incapable of learning, and Speaker Boehner and all those who refuse to use the Checks and Balances found in the US Constitution are TRULY STUPID, especially the Republican Member supporters of Boehner as Speaker in the US House of Representatives.
Force Boehner to resign as Speaker, and THEN Impeach Obama with New House Speaker Louis Gomert, Jim Jordan or Trey Gowdy.
Do nothing, and US Voters may find no EFFECTIVE reason to vote for a do nothing Republican slate of Candidates in November, 2014.
BTW, BTW, just what is the difference between a do-nothing Republican Politician who always caves-in to his Democrat betters, and an Obama Democrat Politician?
Bonehead ought to be next on the chopping block
Like the saying goes “Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya!” Sorry if that sounded a bit crass, and coming from a conservative woman, but there you have it.
He was my daughters Rep, and she said that he forgot to come home to his constituency to touch base. She was sorry to see him go.
**************************
He was my rep, too and he forgot more than just to come home and visit .... he forgot who elected him and who he was supposed to represent. If you add a good dose of arrogance & a pinch of hubris to that mixture, plus a flip flop on amnesty, he sank his own boat. I’m not sorry at all to say “bye bye”. His Big Money Buddies will see that he lands on his feet & takes off running for $greener$ pastures.
“Bonehead ought to be next on the chopping block”
Sorry, but I think he’s already won his primary, and thanks to the idiot voters in his district, he’s on his way back to DC after defeating some RAT placeholder.
Now-now you are just being a radical conservative purist, how dare you expect the GOPE to vote conservative even 30% of the time, then off you go joining a circular firing squad on the poor, well meaning socialist lite GOP creatures.
Good riddance to the sleaze liberal Cantor.
all you be needing to know about Johnny B, mon:
When I first scanned the headline, I thought it said ‘Eric Cartman’.
Which, now that I think about it, may be an improvement.
“some of [Cantor’s] most memorable moments.”
Does that include attending the Republican Main Street Partnership PAC meeting at Amelia Island with Steve LaTourette so he could learn pointers on destroying tea party candidates?
“chop him off of the Speaker-ship”
From your lips to God’s ears!
This ass hat should be pumping gas somewhere or maybe a flagman on a road crew with a little trainng.
