When American astronauts make the next "giant leap" by launching to Mars, they will bring with them a memento from the first moon landing 45 years ago.
NASA on Monday will present the Kennedy Space Center in Florida with a mission patch that Apollo 11 crew mates Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins carried to the moon in 1969, collectSPACE has learned. The patch will be held at the spaceport until the first crew is ready to lift off for the Red Planet on a mission NASA plans for the 2030s.

I won’t hold my breath
Kewl, it’s liable to be 100 years old by that time...
Can NASA spare time away from muslim outreach to be concerned with space exploration?
/sarc
This is probably something everyone knows but me.... But were Neil Armstrong’s famous words “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” really his own, or were they planned ahead of time?
When did NASA get back into the space program?
Half this country on food stamps; our borders wide open and a Marxist in the White House and people actually think we’re going to Mars?
Some people already seem to live there.
That’s nice .. is NASA going to begin a Kickstart project to fund the trip?
Well, I won’t be the one to mention Sheila Jackson Lee.
har-har
Actually his first words were,” Holy crap, we made it.”
I think you're asking if his words were spontaneous or preplanned. What I have learned about Armstrong he would have preplanned his words, or at least a few lines to chose from to be decided sometime prior to undocking.
Well, they solved the patch problem. That pretty much ties up loose ends. Except, I guess, for a few minor details involving propulsion and life-support.
Me too neither....if I'm alive in the 2030's, I won't have a clue who I am, where I is, let alone give a shiite about flying to Mars, or who's doing it.
Patch me in! Houston we have a problem! The planned visit to the Chinese on Mars will have to be Aborted!
No feasible way to get to Mars, nor is there likely to be any feasible way to get there in the foreseeable future. But I surely will be holding my breath before that happens! (And pushin' up daisies!)
Well, first things first. How about fielding a usable rocket again? It is a total embarrassment that we have to rely on other countries for current launching needs.
...and Aldrin's were, "Neil, pass the Charmin if you don't mind; I think I've just shat my space suit."
Ok, thanks.
I want to believe they were his own creation (spontaneous or not). ANYthing but “focus grouped.” LOL
Phew, got the hard part out of the way!
Now, just the simple part remains of getting there and paying for it.
I’ve been over to the space center a couple of times. Its really quite sad the way they focus so much on something that happened so long ago. Its even more sad how little has happened since.
