Perry expected to call up National Guard to Rio Grande Valley
Houston Chronicle ^ | July 21, 2014 | Peggy Fikac, Cindy Horswell

Gov. Rick Perry is expected to announce Monday that he will activate up to 1,000 Texas National Guard troops to the Rio Grande Valley, state Sen. Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa, D-McAllen, confirmed Sunday night.

Perry wants these troops to bolster the work already being done with a surge of Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, said Hinojosa's spokesperson, Jennifer Saenz, who added that the governor gave the Rio Grande Valley delegation notice prior to the planned 2 p.m. announcement on border security.........

In Iowa on Sunday, Perry told a small group at a VFW hall that if President Barack Obama fails to heed his longstanding request to send 1,000 additional National Guard troops, he would use his authority as governor to do so.

"We've sent the message that if we don't get the satisfaction that the federal government's going to move and move quickly, then the state of Texas will, in fact, fill that void," Perry told the group...........

Seriously? And, you’re a Texan? I know plenty of successful *ag majors*... in Texas...and in other states.

Not corn, cotton. Rick's father was a cotton farmer

Rick started out to attend Vet school, but couldn't pass the organic chem course so he had to change his major to agriculture. Same way with Paul Ryan(MD) and Tim Pawlenty(Dentist)

Were it not for Organic Chemistry, these men would never have become politicians

Yes, I know/knew successful ag majors. Texas produces a lot of federally subsidized crops.

Having said that, when I went to college in the 60s, the first of the very well educated ag majors were showing up. Getting undergraduate degrees in the sciences then on to graduate degrees in ag, range management, feed lot management, etc.

When I mentioned DHS, I am talking about Department of Homeland Security, and trust me, I would never confuse them with real cops - The Texas Rangers! I think you are right about setting the rules of engagement by a Governor. In a riot situation, if the Governor tells the Guard to shoot the looters, then shots will be fired at looters.

Here is my scenario, which if I am correct, will happen quickly now. The Democrats will use illegal alien voters to sweep Republicans from power, if not 2014, then 2016 for sure. They will quickly get a 5 member majority on the USSC, and they will institute a ban of private ownership of firearms, and the USSC will agree. Many of the enforcers who will go door to door will be newly sworn in amnestied spanish speaking Federal Officers from Mexico and Central America. They will have access to the military grade equipment, firearms and ammunition which has been propositioned around the country. The local criminals are going to be pikers compared to what is going to happen when firearms are banned.

Pollyanna I am NOT! I will withhold judgement regarding whether or not this is just a feel good effort.

CBP spent $1.1 billion on the Secure Border Initiative, which included SBInet, a
program originally designed to place a series of fixed towers along the border,
and to stream live video from their cameras into Border Patrol vehicles. Although
the ambitious concept was pared down over the years, prime contractor Boeing never
delivered a fully working system and the program was ultimately canceled after
five years of work in 2011.

In its wake comes the 10-year integrated fixed tower and the remote video surveillance
system program budgeted at $1.14 billion and $224 million, respectively.

I hope this happens. I asked several weeks ago who would be the brave governor to step up and do it.

I have been on the border from El Paso to Laredo and agree some areas do not need plugging for illegals.

I have chased these illegal grass crawling invaders in some of the most inhumane country you can imagine in Texas. A goat would turn it’s nose up at it. So there are NOT that many holes that DO NOT need to be plugged.

I have seen the burial cairns and usually you could smell them before you saw them. But, hey they chose to invade this country, I did not ask them over here. Tough shit.

However, where illegal traffic is not there is the cartel traffic in vehicles.

So, 1000 is a drop in the bucket......a very large bucket. Especially when they will be running the coffee machine, emptying the waste basket, and washing BP vehicles after Obama gets thru with them.

Now Bert.....how many times have you taken rounds from drug smugglers on the border......hum?
