On a busy street in central Moscow, a well-dressed man stands yelling at the crowd: "Don't you understand? There will be a war!"
All around him, people walk by, wholly uninterested. It's a hot summer's day, they're enjoying the sun.
Save for a couple of tourists taking pictures, no-one pays much attention at all.
The friend of a friend who saw this, posted the news on Facebook.
Someone responded with a cartoon of Homer Simpson holding a sign that says "The End is Near".
There are people here who are genuinely concerned about the direction Russia is heading under Vladimir Putin, but they are very much in the minority.
Anyone watching Russian state TV (from which, according to a Levada Centre poll, an estimated 94% of population get their news) would have little idea of the weight of the international outrage building against their leader and the threat of serious sanctions to come.
Instead, they will be treated to a rundown of the "10 questions Ukraine's government must answer", and clips of Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, insisting that any accusation of Russian involvement is "unfounded" and that he "hasn't heard anything truthful from Kiev for months".
This will not surprise viewers who have spent those months listening to condemnation of the "junta" in Kiev, which they have regularly been told is controlled by fascists.
The morning after the crash, some Russian newspapers didn't even cover it.
The official state newspaper, Rossiskaya Gazeta, decided the loss of 298 lives was not its top story, leading instead with an "exclusive investigation" into what Russians eat and drink, the fate of flight MH17 relegated to the bottom of the page.

Yes BobL, Putin opposes the homosexual agenda. He gets one thing right. So does Iran. Do you support them too? So do most Islamic countries and terrorist groups, do you also support them?
In any case, like I say, Im done, Ive made my points.
You've made nonsensical points in support of Putin, a former KGB agent, who considers the implosion of communist USSR the greatest tragedy of modern history. Joseph Stalin criminalized homosexuality in the USSR, do you also have a soft spot for him because of that position?
“He gets one thing right. So does Iran. Do you support them too?”
I feel like I’m on a different website than a year ago. There were 47 comments posted to the article I linked (and no, they were not my fake names), not one of them attacked Putin, and half wanted him to be running this country.
Why the 180 here?
Apparently you forget reading about all those times when NATO bombed the wrong forces in Libya.
I’m sure many Russian people feel about their msm as we do about ours and that they do care about innocents and children dying.
Guess they'd better watch out!
Why the 180 here?
Do you realize that once in awhile even, for example, a Democrat gets something right? You may get a thread of people supporting something that Democrat specifically said, but that doesn't mean folks are suddenly allied with him/her. The Democrat is still the ideologically foe even if they get 1 thing right. What's the old saying, "even a broken clock is right twice a day".
The same thing goes for some of the more strident Islamist countries. They tend to vocally oppose the homo agenda more than anyone else, and you'll get a thread or two of people that may support that particular position - that does NOT mean conservatives are suddenly allying themselves with radical Islamists.
NATO bombed the mass murdering terrorist Kadaffy out of power with only a tiny fraction of its might. All Russia could do was bitch and whine about it.
You might want to look over the comments again, they were much deeper and more supportive than just agreeing with a certain policy.
My point is that Putin had (has) a good number of admirers here, and trying to isolate me as the only one (or one of a very small number of people) is not accurate.
They’re not oblivious to it, they just don’t care.
And Libya today is so much better off. /s
Yes, all these dimwits rattling sabers are all talk and buffoonery. The nature of war was changed forever with the invention of nukes. Nobody in his right mind would start a war with a nuclear power over anything other than a direct invasion. The US is not going to get into a war with Russia over the Ukraine.
I still don’t understand why the people in the east can’t secede if that’s their desire anyway. We could use a little secession in this country if the libs keep assaulting our values and liberty.
These simpering, grovelling Putin lovers must not realize this is a pro-American website, not a website for fawning all over America’s genocidal terrorist enemies. This is freerepublic.com, not russiafirst.com.
“The nature of war was changed forever with the invention of nukes. Nobody in his right mind would start a war with a nuclear power over anything other than a direct invasion.”
The Dems will try to push things to the edge (i.e., Wag the Dog), but I suspect Putin has no interest in starting WW3 either.
Agreed, but some are doing their best to foment WWIII. It’s insane. Meanwhile the US is being invaded and conquered without a shot fired. That is where our attention should be.
Today General Hifter, the al-Sisi of Libya is no longer in exile in Langley, Virginia but is back in Libya killing jihadists. As an American who cares about America's interests first, I consider that an improvement.
There are two kinds of people in regards to this. Those who look at specific positions and with an non biased approach can agree with something a foe actually does right. And then there are the Putinista's who, for whatever reason, have chosen to firmly align themselves with a former KGB agent who thinks the loss of the USSR was a great tragedy. The former are being intellectual honest on a case by case basis but haven't lost sight of the big picture, the latter have somehow lost all perspective and in many cases are buying into a bunch of nutty conspiracy theories.
I am well aware there is a small contingent of Putinista's here, of which you are one. Most have just lost the plot. Perhaps the fact that their hero, Putin, is now ultimately responsible for the murder of 298 innocent passengers of a civilian airliner may change a few of their minds.
You know he’s wearing golf clothes right. He had to be pulled off the golf course.
We’ll see how things play out. I think a lot of the admiration for him is based on who our leader is and how much we despise him. Put in a Ted Cruz (or Sarah) type and I suspect most of the glowing assessments would probably go away.
That doesn't even make sense. We have a crappy leader, so till we get a good one we're supposed to admire some other countries tyrannical, crappy leader?
I mean, what your saying is just......well, weird. It's like you desperately want to support someone that comes off as a tough guy or strong man till we get someone sufficiently tough of our own.
So if we elected Ted Cruz suddenly you'd stop admiring Putin? Are you really thinking about the stuff you are saying here. Putin is bad news no matter who we elect, in fact, the public's opposition to him is even MORE important right now when we don't have the kind of leader that can stand up to him by him/herself.
I don’t think they’re oblivious. I think they just don’t care.
