A local grocery actually tried something similar with much fanfare a couple years back, their carts had a small LCD screen on the handle with a speaker that would announce specials and play an ad on the screen when you walked by certain displays. Within a couple months half the devices no longer worked and within six months they were quietly removed entirely. Carts go through a lot of punishment and are outside in all types of weather, not the place for delicate electronics.

A cart would get a lot of punishment from me if it insisted on talking to me. I HATE machines that talk to me.

...as well as exposure to imaginative hackers. I expect to be reading about some very politically incorrect shopping carts soon after these devices are released to the public.
