Many of these guys are ex-military. Imagine being in enemy territory, where the enemy is dressed like civilians, and you aren't allowed any bullets.
They were, like any sane person, scared.
Over here, they at least get to shoot someone. Even if it's a dog.
It starts with an unknown situation, which leads to an adrenaline rush. You fire off a few shots, and then work on your story.
No more panic, no more fear. Works pretty good ... for them.
