It was supposed to be a slam dunk runoff election win for Phil Berger, Jr. in the NC-06 Congressional district last night. It didn’t turnout that way.
In a modern David v. Goliath tale fit for one of his sermons, former Baptist Minister Mark Walker handily beat Phil Berger Jr. in the GOP runoff in the 6th Congressional District last night.
Berger, the Rockingham County District Attorney, had a lot going for him: family connections, high level GOP endorsements, a lot more money than Walker and the help of a dedicated super PAC that attacked often and viciously on his behalf.
But in the end voters said it was what he did with those resources – waging a ceaselessly negative campaign, using over-the-top, scorched earth rhetoric against a politically inexperienced minister with deep ties to the community – that turned them off.
Throughout the campaign Berger shrugged off those criticisms, saying last week: ““A campaign for Congress is the big leagues. Anyone who can’t get their nose bloodied a little bit and suck it up doesn’t belong in politics. And anyone who is worried about that doesn’t understand what big-league politics is about.”
Berger is the son of NC Senate President Phil Berger, Sr., and was expected to walkway with this Congressional seat earlier in the year.
But NC grassroots conservatives aren’t happy these days. Establishment favorite, House Speaker Thom Tillis, beat grassroots conservative-preferred Dr. Greg Brannon in the U.S. Senate GOP Primary a few weeks ago. The Sixth Congressional runoff may be a warning sign that the GOP establishment shouldn’t take conservatives for granted in November.

Maybe this is good news, but there is not a word about what stances the two candidates had on major issues.
Without Helms, NC is mostly lost in the wilderness, but this may be encouraging news. Can the nominee win in the fall?
To paraphrase, “Yes, he can!”
Didn't hear the Berger interview, but from what I see he was a next-generation establishment clone, with daddy & crew pulling the puppet strings.
I count this one as a win for the guys in the white hats...

Walker’s Dem opponent has already drug out the “too extreme for NC” standard answer.
Nor was there any indication about their how well there military records compared with each other. Our leaders in the House and Senate are comparable in that regards insofar as they both claimed medical disability to truncate service.

Well, I’m sure the voters in that District were well informed on the issues. I mean, these campaigns have been going on for nearly a year. But, when you know which candidate is backed by the RINO Establishment and which one is backed by Tea Party Conservatives, you have to wonder? Come on Will, you KNOW who is for more big-government spending and liberal policies and who is for cutting taxes and Liberty.
N.C. has a host of conservatives in the state system gaining experience and preparing to move up. Many counties have turned from blue to red - some totally, and there is a good crop coming along at that level.
What they need now is our encouragement and support.
This forum is read by people from all 50 states and some in foreign countries. Saying that someone is supported by Tea Party types doesn’t tell us much about issues such is immigration, amnesty, foreign policy and other issues beyond budget and spending issues.
This race was not well known to a wide audience and hasn’t been discussed like the Mississippi and Tennessee senate races.
There were two primary runoffs on Tuesday that got no coverage here on Free Republic. The other was Alabama

Gary had come in 2nd in a seven way race to replace Spencer Bachaus. Gary Palmer went on to defeat DeMarco in the primary runoff election on July 15, 2014. He will very likely go on to win the general election race against Democrat Avery Vise. The district has been referred to by some as “the reddest district in the county.”
True, but, if a candidate is supported by the Tea Party you pretty well know what he/she stands for. Same for the candidate supported by the RINO establishment. If I’m passing thru a town and I see a Baptist church on one corner and a Catholic church on another corner, I have a good idea what each of them stand for and what values and beliefs they hold to.
This is the Millenial Generation; not the “Greatest Generation” of World War II era. The percentage of people serving in the Military today is 1/4 what it was in past generations. Don’t expect to find as many Vets running for public office as there were back in the day.
Tea Party voters played a big part in electing Kelly Ayotte and Rand Paul, two thought to be solid conservatives. Now in their fourth year in the senate, both have proven to be disappointing in many of the stances they’ve taken. And that’s just the senate. There is a good number of disappointments in the House, but they are less well known.
Today, illegal immigration, amnesty and the current open borders chaos are issues where many Republicans have been and are going against most Reputlcan voters. This NC race was called David vs. Goliath and the winner is a Baptist minister.
I guess the voters know where he stands on immigration/amnesty/border chaos, but no one has mentioned it here. If he follows the Southern Baptist Convention position, he’ll be all for amnesty and legalizing all the recent illegal entrants.
And Tea Party organizations have not always been clear on those issues, the issues that are the most divisive among Republicans in recent years and especially now.

No one “here” needs to know unless they are voting in NC or sending financial support to one of the campaigns. If so, they have this new invention called “The Internet” so people can do a Google Search and find out where the candidates stand on issues; if they’re not too lazy.
Heard good news from Rush today: Latest Gallup Poll shows that Immigration is NO LONGER a winning issue for the Dems. (Harry Reid is very sad.) I think these kids at the border have changed a lot of people’s minds about Immigration Reform.
Now the new candidate will find himself undermined and sabotaged by his own party
It's all about screwing anyone who isn't in the ruling class. Voters are starting to wake up.
