Great news: Thor’s getting a sex change

To cleanse the palate. He’s got long blonde hair, wears an elaborate costume, and is forever swinging around a large phallic totem. If it was a guitar, I’d have assumed he’s in a hair-metal band and left it at that. But a hammer? The man’s overcompensating. He’s got a secret.

A big one, as it turns out.

Who’s up for a 37-issue series in which Thor quietly contemplates how much harder life is as a woman?

This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of the “big three” of Captain American, Iron Man and Thor. No longer is the classic Thunder God able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, and a brand new female hero will emerge worthy of the name THOR…

“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

I wish Marvel would leave the social commentary to more sophisticated comics, like Archie. Follow the link above for confirmation that, yes, of course Trans-Thor is buxom, which goes to show you that certain core comics conventions must be observed even while in the process of shattering others. In fact, a Twitter pal makes a good point: If you look closely, you’ll see that Thor’s iron breastplate inexplicably yet conveniently ends right below the bra-line, leaving some skin exposed squarely in the center of her midsection. Looks like Trans-Thor is less concerned with protecting her sternum than with giving her male opponents a peek. So much for female empowerment. It’s going to hurt when Loki calls her “Whor.”

After 73 years, Archie of Archie comic books is killed off. Now this. And why isn't the new she-Thor a lesbian? This is bound to piss off lesbians.

Arrgh...not only did they blow the sequel (the Beta Ray Bill story arc would have been perfect, considering the direction the Avengers sequel appears to be taking) but now this? Seriously?

Sif isn't going to swing that way.

Marvel has long defined that Thor’s power is transferrable and it doesn’t have to be male. Wonder Woman was considered worthy to carry his hammer during one of the crossovers.

This is not unprecedented in the least, within the parameters long set by Marvel.

That's a joke, right?

Next on the agenda will probably be making the Invisible Girl into a man.

lol My comment wasnt sexist in the least, I’m just tired of reboots.

I stopped collecting/reading comics in the late 90’s...Marvel titles were my favorites and I’m in nostalgia mode lately...the last batch of movies have been really cool overall...Iron Man in particular.

Do you think this latest gender change through the revolving doors will be temporary? I don’t buy those books anymore, but am still interested in what the young ones are reading. Looks like they finally moved on from Harry Potter.

A “What if” issue or miniseries wouldn’t be a problem for me, it’s just the ‘let’s go PC and screw the old-school fans if they don’t like it etc” trend that irritates me. Comics were a big part of my childhood, and like I commented to Jonty30, I’m tired of reboots...Dagnabbit.

Until the mid 90s, Comics had far more in depth and engrossing stories than anything on TV and better than many fiction novels.

Then PC took total control. See X-Men “Days of Future past/Present” and “Dark Phoenix” saga for the real deal. Not the crap movie rip offs. One could even include X-tinction Agenda.

I feel sorry for those that havent read them. And with walls full of fiction I have read over they years, I have plenty to compare it to.

Back in my day if we wanted to find out about Thor we'd read the Elder Edda in its original Icelandic and we liked it.
