The latest Washington Post-ABC News poll will be setting the narrative for the rest of the day, and that narrative is not an especially good one for Republicans. While Americans are not happy with the presidents approach to the border crisis, this poll suggests that the public is even less happy with Republicans and want the GOP to pass the presidents $3.7 billion supplemental package to deal with the situation on the southern border immediately.
Overall, 33 percent of respondents said they approve of the presidents handling of the humanitarian disaster on the border while 58 percent disapprove. Those are terrible numbers, but they look better in comparison to congressional Republicans.
Of congressional Republicans, 66 percent disapprove of their handling of the border crisis while only 23 percent approve. A majority, 53 percent, support Obamas proposed emergency spending package billed as being designed to provide care for these children while their deportation cases are heard and speed their deportation hearings and to increase border security.
It looks like the GOP is in a terrible position from these topline results. Why the pollster even thought to ask how respondents about how the Republicans in Congress are handling the border crisis is a mystery if not for a desire to contrast the president against a more unpopular foil. A glance at the data, however, suggests that the presidents approach to the border crisis is in a far worse position with the American public.
Republican in Congress, who receive poor marks from nearly two-thirds of the public, can attribute some of that antipathy to their own voters. Almost as many Republicans disapprove of their partys handling of the issue as say they approve, with negative ratings rising to a majority among conservatives, reads The Posts write up of the poll. 48 percent approve of the GOPs approach to the crisis while 45 percent disapprove.
Only 22 percent of independents and 9 percent of Democrats approve of the GOPs approach to the crisis. The president, meanwhile, maintains the support of 57 percent of Democrats who approve of his approach to the border crisis. 12 percent of Republicans and 28 percent of independents agree. If the GOP maintained the intraparty unity that Obama benefits from, their numbers would look similar to the presidents.
More interestingly, support Obamas handling of the crisis across racial demographics is shockingly weak. Only 27 percent of whites support his approach compared to 66 percent who oppose it. Just 55 percent of African-Americans back the presidents approach to this crisis an unusually low finding for a demographic whose approval of the president Gallup currently pegs at 84 percent. Finally, a majority of Latinos 54 percent disapprove of Obamas handling of the border crisis. Only 40 percent support his approach.
As for the support of the supplemental package, it is unclear why anyone would oppose it based on both the wording of the proposal put to voters in this survey and the absence of an alternative. Without a counter proposal, the fact that throwing money at a problem money aimed at providing medical care to needy children, no less only received 53 percent support is striking.
But digging into the numbers here is also instructive. Among registered voters, as opposed to all adults, the proposal loses 2 points shifts from support to opposition (51/45). Two-thirds of self-described Democrats support the proposal along with 51 percent of independents.
35 percent of self-identified Republicans back the proposal. The most opposition to the plan comes from those who identify as conservative Republican. Among this group, only 29 percent support the supplemental package while 66 percent oppose it.
In a crisis, and the situation at the border is a crisis, a plan always beats no plan. Right now, while it is imperfect and many do not trust that the federal government will carry out the deportation of the majority of the unaccompanied children migrants at the conclusion of their expedited deportation hearings, the proposed supplemental package remains the only option on the table to deal with an acute catastrophe.
Why this pollster decided to gauge the nations opinion of how congressional Republicans have handled this situation, I have no idea. Beyond the fact that it serves to conveniently remind the public that the GOP is, as ever, more unpopular than Obama a refrain you will hear for the rest of the day.
Well when co-conspirators take your polls what do you expect the results to be?

Whatever numbers tat the polls say approve it you know they are far less or skewed by takin poll numbers from a select democrat that you know will support whatever agenda you want to promote
Congress is composed mainly of crooks and grifters who deserve to be voter out of office en mass. However, my own congress critter and U.S. Senators are exceptions.
So, you support and trust the Congressional GOP on border issues?
You would have answered “yes” to the poll question?
What’s wrong with you?
Yeah. $400M to deal with the border crisis; 3.3B stuffed into politician’s back pockets. I will lay $$$!that later it will be found out that 0 used a complex network of shell entities to divert tax $$$$$$$ into his own coffers and stole from the taxpayer’s.
Right. I don’t support the way the GOP is handling this issue either.
If the Low Information Voter understood that the vast majority of the $3.7 billion was to protect, feed, educate and provide lawyers for the illegal immigrants and only a very, very small portion to protect the border, the results would be different.
No one wants to talk about exactly where the money is going. Guess where? Lawyers and immigration advocates who are friends of the White House and open borders.
No one would argue that these people should be treated humanely as they are expeditiously returned home. That would leave about $3.5 billion to secure the border. Now, that would work!
This article’s peckerwood author pre-supposes that the WashPost/ABC is good authority. Most Americans are the people you can’t fool all of the time.
My solution should be tried — send both the illegals and the leftists together to central America. Problems solved. The leftists will create a utopian paradise from which nobody would want to flee. And they will no longer have to be concerned about global warming since without all their hot air impacting on the active weather patterns, things will quickly return to normal.
“It looks like the GOP is in a terrible position from these topline results.”
The author does eventually make a point, just not very clearly. The president’s position is generally unpopular with the majority, but it is the less worse position.
Obama’s ratings are better than Congressional Republicans because his support is partisan. The GOPe are not supported by Democrats or conservative Republicans. The takeaway lesson should be for Republicans to move right and earn the support of conservatives since they will never please the left-wing voters as well as their die-hard socialist counterparts.
But the media meme will be to support Obama. He has the less worse solution. (Supposedly.)
With exceptions conspicuous by their rarity, I trust NO ONE in Washington on border issues or anything else.
It’s what we get for allowing the 47% welfare dorks vote.
ZUCKERBERG WHERE DO YOU LIVE??

Where exactly do the people from this poll suggest we get the 3.7 BILLION dollars? Our Government is broke, we as a Nation are broke. 17-18 TRILLION dollars broke.
What exactly do the people in this pole expect 3.7 BILLION dollars will accomplish? Will it get these invader sent back to where they came from? Will it somehow stop the next wave of 50 75 100 thousand invaders from coming here?
Some people better wise up. Before it is too late if it is not already..........
Pollsters lie and create false facts and the regime in power lies like a rug. What’s new.
Bill Whittle for President!
I have a nominating speech all prepared!
Congress is usually more unpopular than a president. When the poll just asks about congress. Now, if they ask about a local congressman, that changes.
