Great fun for kids (and their adult parent, I hasten to add) was to dig a shovel full of anthill from one hill, and a shovelfull from another...then dump em on the opposite ant hills and watch the war erupt!
(Simple things amuse me when I am in the northwoods at the lake ;-)

Done that with 100% kill rate for the hills. It's pretty darn effective. We have 20 acres of fire ants and considerable experience.
