Closure notices sent to Trump Plaza workers

Job losses at Trump Plaza when the Atlantic City casino shuts down in September will be even worse than expected.

Trump Entertainment Resorts began mailing notices to its workers on Monday, informing them that while a final decision has not been reached, management expects to close the casino on Sept. 16.

The notice says 1,153 people will lose their jobs, up from estimates of just over 1,000 last week.

The figure is contained in federally-required WARN notices that must be sent to workers at least 60 days before an anticipated shutdown or mass layoff. In the notice, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, the company lists 1,153 under a section that reads, "Number of employees to be terminated."

The job losses are sending shock waves through what until just a few years ago was the nation's second-largest gambling market. New Jersey has now lost that position to Pennsylvania.

Trump Plaza has been the worst-performing of Atlantic City's 11 casinos, and is one of three casinos currently operating that could close before fall.

The Showboat is closing Aug. 31, and Revel says it will shut down if a buyer can't be found in bankruptcy court.

The Atlantic Club shut down in January.

I just dont understand how Atlantic City can suffer.

Atlantic City is one itsy bitsy step removed from being a smoking crater. High crime, terribly depressing surroundings, nothing to do but gamble with the "help" of casino employees who hate every minute of their miserable lives and act like it. On the plus side, what they're missing in hospitality, they more than make up for in nasty attitudes.

Las Vegas can only dream of having the population area that Atlantic City has yet Vegas while in a downturn still crushes them.

"Camden with slots" vs. Las Vegas? No comparison.

I think maybe because one is viewed as a weekend trip while the other is a vacation.

One is a collection of run down hotels huddled in the corner of one of the worst, crime-ridden, drug addled cities in on of the worst, most crime-ridden states in the country. The other is Las Vegas.

If I’m as brilliant as Trump thinks he is, I figure out a way to rubuild that investment so that it will regain profitability...prices??, availability ??, conferences??,specials??,give aways??, anything to get people with money in their pockets to enter your establishment....and then figure out how to get them to spend it

The people who tend to visit any attraction tend to be the visitors, not the residents. It’s probably because the residents of any city with attractions tend to think along the lines that they can visit anytime they want to, so it’s not a priority for them.

Cannot bring myself to be concerned for the demise of businesses making money off of the mathematically challenged.

We would never allow a business to take advantage of physically or mentally handicapped but we have no problem taking advantage of the mathematically handicapped.

The plaza was so bad that the only thing they can do is demolish it and salt the ground.

You missed the other racist reason, namely the lovely and joyful employees who hate whitey and want you to know it.

I’ve been to Las Vegas and they very much recommended not wandering off the strip, unless you were going straight to Freemont street.

Probably nicer than the average AC blackjack dealer.

Trump sold it for $20 million last year... His only connection to it now is his name on the building.
