The Dems and some Reps are holding border security hostage to amnesty. In fact, most Reps want an increase in guest workers and would be willing to trade amnesty for more guest workers. Border security is really a distraction in many ways.
There will be no border security bill without other things attached. If the GOP position is that nothing will be done with the illegals until the border is secured, they are already signaling that they will make a deal on legalization. And depending on how long it takes to secure the border, what do you do in terms of enforcement? Do you continue to deport illegals? Are they allowed to stay while the border is secured?
No, I’d say enforce the laws on the books now as we secure the border. If voters don’t like the laws, change them. I understand my position does not resolve the underlying problems but I don’t think we can fix it with one overall bill. Besides, if Democrats won’t enforce the laws today what makes anyone think they’ll enforce anything new?
IMHO, it’s better to put off the border problems until we have a Republican Senate to support our Republican House. Once that’s in place maybe we can get some things accomplished.
I do agree this whole thing is 0bama forcing immigration as a campaign issue to help Democrats. I’d say stall or make the bills too hard for Democrats to support them for now. We need to address these issues next year with a new congress that really represents the voters.

Yet we cannot forget the suffering of our fellow Americans in border locations. There are ranchers who are having their houses invaded regularly. There is additional drug crime and gangs.
