Arthur Walker, one of four men convicted of selling secrets to the Soviet Union during the Cold War, has died in federal prison. He was 79. The Federal Bureau of Prisons website confirmed that he died this month. A spokesman said he died over the holiday weekend, and Walker's family told Pete Earley, who wrote "Family of Spies: Inside the John Walker Spy Ring," that he died Friday of acute kidney failure.

Walker was serving three life sentences plus 40 years for copying and conspiring to deliver secrets to the Soviet Union. He was sentenced in 1985.

I had the same basic career field as this guys brother but I joined in 86. They checked my fingerprints against those in the hospital where I was born and then checked my parents.

They monitored us something fierce as well.

A retired Lt. Cmdr. is most likely a guy who was passed over for Commander

Missed the word "retired".

Thanks for the clarification.

For example they gave the Russians access to flight schedules over Vietnam allowing them to move SAM batteries into place. Numerous b52 were lost because of them.

When I was in Nam, I talked to a USAF A-37 pilot, who told me the Vietnamese always seemed to know where they were going to fly their missions. I just chalked it up to the grapevine. Years later, I wondered if the Walker spy ring was the cause of that? Probably yes, I would say.

What is clearly etched in my memory about Viet Nam was how we would stop fighting for two weeks, to hold Peace Talks, every time the the Viet Cong or NVA ran short on ammunition.

Were you aware that our pilots weren’t allowed to attack anything within 20 miles of the coastline in North Viet Nam?

Or that all targets had to be approved by the Soviet officer who was in charge of Security at the UN? He would place a 48 hour freeze on the target, after it was approved, against it being attacked which gave the NVA time to set up their SAMs knowing an attack was coming.

Myself, I think the blame is with politicians who get us involved in wars that they have no intention of allowing us to win.

The longer we fight in a war the more money there is to be made from that conflict. That is a fact politicians don’t like to admit especially when you remind them that Americans are dying because of their sorry assed policies.

Much of what they told us is still probably classified but this has been publicly available in news papers and official reports. Walker gave them flight plans and the capability to intercept communications. Yes the Russians and Vietnam k ew.
