Conservative truck owners have a new way to rebel against environmentalists and the government’s obsession with carbon footprints: tricking-out diesel pickups with coal stacks that spew black smoke. Called “coal rollers,” these smoky renegades use their sweet chimney stacks to smoke-out hybrids by emitting black exhaust into the atmosphere.

One woman said that she floored her diesel truck to smoke out a couple bicycles. They took her license number and she was told to report for an emissions test.

I could see smoking out protesters, but just some bicyclists minding their own business, what a d*ck.
This is just plain goofy. All it will do is increase pollution. That will result in even stricter regulations perhaps resulting in banning diesel engines altogether.
I have no problem with coal rollers. It’s their dime. That being said, one of these morons is going to get someone killed or severely injured because the rollee can’t see the road ahead, or someone else can’t see the rollee. Then the laughing stops.
The green weenies will blow a gasket! It would be nice to see a Prius boxed in at a stoplight by half a dozen of these guys running full tilt boogie.

The author is confusing the word “conservative” with the word “redneck” or perhaps “jerk” or even “asshole”.
Yes, some rednecks are conservatives and some conservative are rednecks, but REAL conservatives believe in conserving things, you know, like natural resources and a livable environment and so wouldn’t deliberately pollute the environment, waste energy resources, and potentially induce accidents by supposedly demonstrating some pointless point about the type of vehicle a fellow human being chooses to drive.
Clearly the author has exposed their personal viewpoint as to the nature of conservatives as well as promulgating the usual bias of the usual “Progressive” media “journalists”

Lucky for me the safety shut down devices (which I *think* are something like spring loaded plates which are rigged to close when the incoming air velocity exceeds certain amounts) did work.
It was screaming there for a while...I thought it was going to blow up.
Years later I was offered a pair of those type of engines, complete with crash boxes but declined the offer.
Now if they had been 471's (which can be good for 30-35ft boats) or 271's which can be good light-plant engines...or 353's which are used in a lot of seine skiffs, or almost anything other than those 671's which at one time were very common on the West coast, then it would have been worth it to take possession.
